Is This a New Jay Fulton? Or Does He Need To Go?

Grimes stops being captain, team improves. Strange. I'd always held the position that Grimes is not captain material.
But what do I know?
Grimes goes, team go forwards and are more potent with less possession
Grimes goes. Coventry go backwards and sideways
Grimes goes. Jay Fulton looks a lot better.

Really wondering what Grimes had on previous managers and the club
Even though according to some of our fonts of wisdom, we'd be screwed without Grimes and should have binned Jay

It’s not a Grimes thing. I know that’s what everyone likes to jump on, but it’s just lazy. We (and Jay) have still at times been utterly shit after Grimes left (remember Sheffield Wed away?). Meanwhile Coventry are something like 3rd or 4th in the form table since he went there and we also played plenty well plenty of times while Grimes was here. So blaming Grimes for everything doesn’t wash.

It’s great to see Jay have a good game at last though. It’s long overdue. Last time I looked at the stats for DM players in the Championship, his defensive side was about as bad as it got (he was averaging a successful tackle every 4 games). So this is long overdue. There was a player in there. That player has been missing for a few years, but hopefully he can build on the Leeds game and consistently get back to the level he was at.

Sometimes I wonder if there was any lingering mental trauma after he got sent off against Brentford in the final.

Ever since then the fire in his game has consistently been missing. People may scoff at the theory but that kind of thing can last for years, in baseball its known as the yips - for example a baseball pitcher who costs his team a critical game by hitting the batter might struggle for months or years to be able to pitch to the inside again.

Fulton back in the team. Let's see what he is made of today. Let's hope he proves us all wrong 😝.

Ineffectual for me today. When the team was screaming for someone to take charge in the middle and give some quality distribution he hid instead. Never turned into space and always gave it easy back to the defenders when we were desperate for someone to put us on the front foot.

Was pretty anonymous today, saying that the rest of the team didn't exactly cover themselves in glory, 3 attempts on goal at home to Derby and a rola cola cooperball performance, don't think Sheezy is the right man for next season

I’m not going to diss Fulton. He was never a superstar to begin with, was steady enough in our Premier League years and had any ounce of positivity coached out of him by at least one manager. It’s also not his fault that contracts were offered to him.

Fulton has been terrible for years now. Credit to him he wa offered a contract but, 1 year left on his contract come the summer he needs to go. Add Christie, Naughton and few others to that.

Just need to move him on in summer. He clearly has fans within new coach set up. Being a scot and all. He is a Grimes player to me but less effective. Though not Grimes Fan. Fulton likes a good back pass and fouls for fouling and has 0 effect.

Not all of that is his fault. The football equivalent of painting by numbers hasn’t done anything for quite a few in our team.

What I’m sure we all agree on is that he’s at the back end of his career, so it’s all a bit irrelevant now. Time to move on.

We need a serous squad rebuild this summer
I would have no problem if we had to lean into academy players such as Kyrell Wilson and Joel Cotterill, if it means we get rid of Christie, Fulton, Naughton, McLaughlin and few others. Compliment that with Melker Widell and few fresh faces.

Yes, he didn’t have an impact. It’s not easy for whoever’s in the centre as we play everything down the flanks. There’s always a big hole in front of our DCM. Nevertheless he was still missing a lot. Tidy enough in possession without doing much. Zero tackles, interceptions or clearances, but to be fair most of Derby’s attacks were long balls over his head.

Given the way Derby play/played, it seemed pretty obvious that Fulton was asked to sit deep as a physical presence as opposed to a creative one and given the zero goals against you'd have to say job done.

No matter what he does Jay will always take stick from some.

Been different since Sideshow Grimes left.
