I do agree with you here.Wouldn't a long stretch of very visible community service do this better than sticking them in a prison, where most people would have forgotten about them after a few months?
Perhaps they could be assigned to spend a long time helping with the wall and the replacement tree that has been planted, alongside other community service work?
However, I recall watching a drama a year or so back starring Sean Bean who played a bloke imprisoned for a serious motoring offence. If real prison life was anything like it was portrayed then that should be enough to deter anyone from finding themselves there. My point being, if we want to promote a society where the majority can go about their business without the fear of being assaulted or have their car nicked or house burgled then we must have punishments severe enough to act as a deterrent; otherwise we risk a descent into anarchy.
