The review system would be a good intervention to have as the dugouts can establish very quickly on their tablet screens whether or not a mistake has been made by the officials on the field of play.
However, I would allow for 3 reviews per team, just like it is in tennis, with a wrong call reducing the amount of reviews by one each time, until the manager/coach is left with zero reviews to fall back on.
To my mind this would be a fair tally of challenges, especially as there would probably be a time limit within which you can dispute the decision, and so a challenge could well have been made in the heat of the moment, which would result in a genuine mistake being made on the part of the manager/coach.
The balance of power at the moment, is too heavily tipped in the favour of what are at times completely incompetent officials, who make decisions seemingly on a whim with too much frequency throughout a season.
This would be a great way to even things up, so that the manager/coach and their respective teams, and by extension the fans of that team, don’t feel as powerless as they currently are when the referee and his cohorts get it so obviously and terribly wrong.
Another thing that can be changed for the better, is for the veil to be lifted on the replays of the incident in question, by putting them on the big screens that frequent most stadiums these days.
Why the footage of the incident being reviewed is so shrouded in mystery is, well, something of a mystery to me.
As it stands, it’s as if the fans within the stadium are being barred from seeing what should be shown for all the world to see.
My feelings on this is, let the spectators see what is being adjudicated on.
Let there be no hiding place for the officials if they still decide to ignore what is not just in front of their eyes upon review, but in the front of everyone’s eyes in the stadium.
I for one, would welcome any changes that improve what is currently a flawed review system that still allows the referee to get away with their incompetences/biases.
