Well that's the problem with it isn't it, it's not the system , it's the idiots making the call that is the issue.

There's nothing wrong with VAR. It's always going to be the human element as the weak link.

As others have said, while VAR was supposed to end the most obviously poor decisions, we didn't take into account it was the same people currently making those mistakes that would be running VAR.

I don't envy referees, they have a tough job and are surrounded by players who are experts at conning them, plus managers and fans who give them heaps of abuse, sometimes fairly, often not. But the officials running VAR need to start being separate from the other officials. They don't have to be trained referees, they need to have a thorough understanding of the rules and some common sense. Stop the VAR officials from making decisions that sometimes seem to be all about not embarrassing their on-field colleagues.

I find it really strange that they didn't initially go with recently retired referees as the VARs. Seemed an obvious route to go down before then training people for that specific role.

Appreciate that it seems to work ok in rugby and cricket, but the dynamics of being the onfield ref on Saturday and then VAR on Sunday (swapping with a colleague) seemed like a recipe for disaster, especially with all the media and fan scrutiny.

VAR should be run by a specialist VAR team. If you need an experienced ref for context then have one in the room who can provide guidance. Leave operating the system to people adept at moving quickly through data and feeds that is not a luddite like Bobby Madley who can barely manage the substitutions board let alone run VAR system checks in a timely and accurate manner.

I remember when the first bits of feedback from hot mics they were still talking in casual lingo rather than using accurate professional terms.

Clubs should be allowed to claim compensation from the relevant governing body when a mistake like this happens.

At the moment there is zero accountability. Ooops, sorry about that, lets move on.
