The 'Vitor Matos' Managerial Thread?

I think some are trying to talk themselves into this being a positive innovative appointment! I personally think it's meh and I'd happily eat my words but I'm confident that I'm not going to we not considered any sort of threat by anyone else in this division our mentality from top to bottom is not good enough. Losing 3-1 to Ipswich last home game and swans TV were talking about the fcking Christmas jumpers have just gone on sale at the clubshop

This is a bit where I'm at. I can't help but see this as a likely disaster appointment, especially if we're paying a €1m buyout.

Basically, if he comes and he's a disaster, we're f@cked. If he comes and he's amazing, he'll quickly get poached by a bigger fish. We're taking a big risk with little upside of reward. We had better be including something like a £5m buyout on our contract.

I was trying to be more positive about it yesterday but it’s pretty inescapable how much of a risk we’re taking here and as people have said, reads as the club trying to be clever. All we can do is hope that they’ve pulled a blinder and it pays off.

Can't say I'm an avid watcher of the Portugese 2nd division but would it be fair to say the conference is a better quality division then it?

I don't particularly rate the Portuguese 1st division beside the obvious big 4 teams the rest of the league is high lg1/very low championship level.

Interesting to read that he did his coaching badges with the FAW in 2024 - same time as Sheehan I believe

I would guess our paths have crossed during this time and this is where the initial connection has been made.

Lots of risk but I think his knowledge of the British game & championship is more in depth than we initially realised

If you're creative enough - and possibly high - you can draw a line from Modric to Matos.

From what I gather on the FAW site, Matos was in the same FAW Pro License cohort as Davide Ancelotti. Maybe, mmaayybeeeee.........there is a whiff of a Modric link there. This info goes back to when Matos was at Liverpool and Davide Ancelotti was working at Real with Daddio and Modric. Could it be possible that Modric was asked to put the feelers out for recommendations on top young head coach prospects and Davide Ancelotti suggested his buddy Matos? or at least vouched for him in some way as there is a - admittedly tenuous - connection there?

We lost 4-1 to Ipswich

Dear me, we’ve just lost 4-1 at home and we’re in free fall. Not the right time for this kind of thing.

Why oh why can’t we go down the experienced ex-Championship manager route?
Lots of typical merry-go-round names would be equally as uninspiring in my opinion. Only one I would be in favour of is Mowbray. I was hoping though, that we’d go for someone with more experience as a manager in general, not fussed on if they know the Championship. The league is over hyped a lot for me.

Not that I disagree, but as I mentioned earlier on one of these threads - who are these experienced ex Championship managers? The only ones available are journeyman box-tickers like Mowbray, Warburton, or Hughton, and signing any of those basically says 'we're giving up for a bit'

This is what I was thinking.
Experienced championship managers are either still in a job with their team, which we won’t have any pull to poach off.
If they are really good then they will get pinched or have ambitions for/by the prem.
If they are crap then they get sacked and we don’t want them.
There may be a few, but who, carrick? Or is he waiting for a bigger club.

Think we need to remember who we are.
With the people we have behind us now, maybe soon we will have that pull but I think not yet.
So we have to unearth gems which sometimes turn out to be dog shit.
