I know I date myself - but the likes of Clough and Ferguson picked defenders who could defend and attackers who attacked.
A famous left back who liked to bomb forward was told by Clough "if you want to play that way you will battle for the 11 jersey - you won't ever be wearing the 3".
Fast forward to 2025 - we have Ronald who is picked because he 'puts in a shift defensively", and Key - who literally cannot defend at all. There is a commentary on Ronald's err "qualities" in this thread - and I would add his absolute unwillingness to learn or apply the offside law.
As for Key...as a football coach - everything is wrong with this boy:
His starting position gifts his winger the time to get the ball under control and attack him with pace
His body position puts him off balance when a winger runs at him - that is why he often looks flat footed
He gets muscled off the ball way too easily
Worst of all - he has no appreciation of danger, or anticipation. When he came on at Stoke, his singular job was to neutralise the threat of Sorba Thomas. 30 seconds later, not only did he not get close to him - he had absolutely no idea where he was!
IF it was me - I would play a defensively sound player at RB - Casey is screaming for attention here- and then play Innoussa ahead of him with instructions to take the opposition on and use his pace and trickery.
On the other flank I would persevere with Tymon and Eom - and Play Widell in place of Cullen.
Such an easy job.
