Interesting article below in the wake of the Diaz miss. Also includes a lot of insight into penalty taking by our very own Lee Trundle.

For me, if you're going down the middle - smash it. A Panenka when it goes in is great, but still show-offy for me. Not worth the risk unless you're at least three up.

Interestingly the stats in the article suggest straight down the middle (probably hard) beats left or right.

Yes, whang it as hard as you can, wherever you’ve chosen, and don’t change your mind or play stupid games. Oh and take a proper 15 yard run up like Leighton James. No pissing about with stutters and standing two feet from the ball. If the goalie saves it then, he’s something special.

Yep, I do like to see a long run up followed by an on-target smash.

Having said that though, Ivan Toney, with just one step, still fills me with confidence that he will score - but he is a supreme professional penalty taker. He's certainly a rare one with that style.

( And unfortunately I saw it first hand behind the goal at Wembley those few years back !)

Danny Murphy said whenever he was taking a penalty late in a game (or in a shootout), he'd tend to go straight down the middle because the keeper will always want to be a hero so was practically guaranteed to dive left or right

High and just off-middle - almost impossible for any keeper to save, especially if they dive one way or another. No need to smash it, just try and place it there.

Graham Alexander one of the best penalty takers ever had a plan on his penalty .
Depending on what time was on the clock determined what he would do .
He alternated between left or right corner into the last 10 mins he would go down the middle .
