We also had a Finnish defender on trial around 1990 called Ari Heikkinen.
Strangely, as someone else mentioned I remember the friendly at the Vetch (although wouldn’t have remembered his name) as well!

I guess it was unusual at the time as I’m sure there’s loads of UK based players that have played in the odd friendly that I’d never remember!

Around that time we seemed to be in desperate need for a centre half, seemed to go on for a few years until Keith Walker was moved from midfield to centre half and the rest was history.
I remember a deal didn't happen for Heikkinen because his club wanted too much for him(or so it was said) and about a year later we took a young chap on trial from Rochdale, agreed a fee of 50k of my memory serves me and then he got injured whilst with us and the deal was off....that player was future Sunderland,Leeds,Wolves and ROI international Paul Butler.

As you say, loads of trialists over the years that came to us both UK and foreign based.

I think your memory is confused....Walker always a centre back....that is what he was signed as..

From what I remember Sky Walker signed as a midfielder .
Frank Burrows converted him into a centre back alongside Chopper Harris .
John Hughes was a centre forward who went back to Scotland then he later played centre back.

That is correct.

Now you mention it, I would think it's almost certainly pronounced 'Val-ta'. But on that topic, I'm pretty sure Matos should be pronounced 'Matoosh' anyway and almost nobody does.
Matush is about right I think, bit like how to say sagres - sagrish

According to his wiki page he was always a centre back and various other quick looks on google state the same.

Goes to prove you can't always rely on that.
He was certainly signed as a central midfielder and as above John Hughes along with Chalmers as a striker.
John Hughes later become a centre half.

Different days, spending 300k was huge for us back in the day.

Who cares what the correct pronunciation is, he’s ours now and we’ll call him what we like.
Remember Gwylim Bauza?

I can post numerous other links where it states he was a central defender for all his clubs.

The forum knows your incessant, obsession to be some kind of Swansea City oracle, so I'll leave it there.
