I remember Keith Walker fondly. Nickname of 'Sky' if I remember.

I remember him as a centre-half. Great partnership with Mark 'Chopper' Harris. I do remember him playing in midfield, but can't remember the timing - whether it was right after he joined or later when needed (or both). Left and became a copper I think.
He did become a copper. He went to Merthyr for a bit after us.
The partnership with him and Harris was as good as you could get in the 3rd tier.
Luckily the Bosman rule wasn't in place in 1996 otherwise he would have walked as a free agent. He later signed a contract which I believe his presence in the 1996/97 team helped our surge up the table to our eventual defeat to Northampton in the final. It never looked possible when we were sat 23rd in the league after defeat to Torquay at plainmoor.

Yeah some players seemed versatile but players moving positions from one to another and sticking is not as common I would think.
Didnt our old goalkeeper Brian Murphy move from outfield to goalkeeper during his youth days at Citeh?
I think Cardiff had similar with Josh Magennis but from goalie to striker

Outsiders coming to this thread to learn about the reaction to Leo 'Messi' Walta's signing might be a little disappointed, but they're certainly getting a good education on 80/90's Swansea defenders at least.
I apologise, it was myself who mentioned Keith Walker. It angled off from Finnish players to trialists to Keith Walker.
Some might have enjoyed it mind 🤣

No, it's all good stuff. I was just picturing some eager young Finnish football fan coming and seeing 10 pages on Leo Walta and leaving slightly disappointed, but knowing a lot more about our C20th scottish transfer dealings:LOL:

On a final note, looking through Keith Walker’s opening 3 seasons, I believe he arrived at the Vetch Field as a midfielder but in his first 5 games he covered for the injured Terry Boyle at c/back alongside Mark Harris. Following an injury that saw him sidelined for almost 2 months he returned to the 89/90 season finishing the last 6 weeks or so at c/back or in midfield. Injuries continued to affect Walker during the 1990/91 season wherever he played, but it was only after a late start to season 91/92 in late November he consolidated the number 4 shirt alongside c/back Harris that became a formidable partnership for a number of seasons.

🤣 History being rewritten....literally.

Luckily the people who were around when he signed will know the story and situation regards Keith Walker and how he ended up as a centre half with us.
I will also say, he never played in attack.

I would also guess that Berwick would have John Hughes down as a centre back on Transfermarkt prior to joining us despite him being a centre forward.

I feel posters are just replying back to posters rather than the post itself just to create arguments and attempt to belittle.

You think these websites are doing it in real
time to annoy you?

Not at all but he certainly arrived as a Midfielder and ended up playing centre half.
I checked Transfermarkt and they had John Hughes marked up as a centre back when he was actually a centre forward.
It appears that these places online are just going by what they have found online from places like Transfermarkt rather than the actual happenings.

👍
Thank you for the information, very interesting.

St Mirren squad list from 1987:

Keith Walker: CB, 22 years old

Walker definitely joined as a midfielder. He was tall though (6ft ish?) and had played at the back so moved there with us.

There is bizarrely a long interview online (you tube) interviewing the manager and Tommy H about the three who joined at the same time and he says on that Walker is a midfielder who can also ‘play at t he back’.

Good days. That was a great team. I particularly remember Judith (those who were there will know) with great fondness. Always liked him.
