Not many of the sides we’ve played this season that are up there have been very good. What a season for us to have a mare in!

Awful today, but I’m confident we’ll pull away from trouble. We’ve somehow picked up 17 points, playing some pretty dire football, we’ve got a striker who knows where the net is (and didn’t start him today) and Cabango and Tymon will make a difference. Matos has got a half decent group to work...

    The ‘Vítor Matos’ Managerial Thread

Confirmed by Maritimo on Instagram. Matos is joining us, thankfully we look to have the manager search sorted. Their post doesn’t mention whether or not he will take their game on the weekend but I’d assume he’ll be in our dugout for the Derby game on Wednesday.

They’ll probably have more detailed information on Matos than we do. Still though, small sample size and a big big risk.

There will be a lot of candidates, it may feel like slim pickings but Hellberg probably would have been a decent shout going by the media reaction to his Boro move, and I think the club genuinely thought Matos was a good option. I don’t think this is bottom of the barrel for us.

    O Dea

To be fair though, news that Hellberg was close came last weekend. We’d have probably appointed him by now if it was still going to happen. That would have been Hellberg appointed within a week. We obviously didn’t see Boro coming in for him and that has delayed things for us. Ideally they would...

    O Dea

I think we should have had some communication earlier than now but we can’t blame the club. They were acting quickly and clearly thought they had Hellberg. 9 days since Sheehan went, if we have Matos in before Derby we won’t have been without a manager for too long.

There’s definitely something to that. I always think of Kompany getting the Bayern job. Some experience with Anderlecht and Burnley but nothing on his CV suggests he would have been among the names for a job that good. Bayern saw his playing style and that he could manage a group of players that...

Oh yeah, completely forgot about that. Hackney then, is the only player that’s levels above us.

This. It’s the reality of the situation. Although, I do think Matos must’ve been fairly high on the list if candidates given the speed that we’ve moved on from Hellberg. I’d also argue that Boro don’t have that much of a better playing squad than us. Apart from Hackney and maybe Azaz, they...

    The ‘Vítor Matos’ Managerial Thread

Lots of typical merry-go-round names would be equally as uninspiring in my opinion. Only one I would be in favour of is Mowbray. I was hoping though, that we’d go for someone with more experience as a manager in general, not fussed on if they know the Championship. The league is over hyped a lot...

Is Vitor Matos the Right Fit for Swansea City? The Case for Patience

In fairness, I saw a Maritimo fan on Twitter say that they don’t have a problem creating chances but the strikers they have available aren’t finishing. Hopefully Vipotnik and Idah can do better if we start creating chances more.

I was trying to be more positive about it yesterday but it’s pretty inescapable how much of a risk we’re taking here and as people have said, reads as the club trying to be clever. All we can do is hope that they’ve pulled a blinder and it pays off.

I’ve tried to look at some, but it’s as you say, not much footage of Maritimo in open play. The pressing is evident though and there are one or two good passing moves.

Is Vitor Matos the Right Fit for Swansea City? The Case for Patience

Earlier in the season, yes. I think Birmingham have picked up recently though. The one I lament the most is Eustace, proven himself as a good manager at this level, although yet to challenge near the top, that’s mostly because he was bizarrely sacked by Birmingham and seems like he’s in a...

    The ‘Vítor Matos’ Managerial Thread

I feel like there is a slight difference between people like Davies and Eustace and appointing Matos. Both of the former had been assistant managers at similar levels to where we were/are. Matos only has a few months experience as a no.2 at Salzburg which didn’t go well (which wouldn’t have been...

The only other thing I’ve seen about Matos apart from betting odds is from the BBC yesterday who said he was in the running. I usually take them at their word.

I don’t think things are quite that bleak. I think we have good enough players that if we can even remotely improve our attacking output this season and retain a reasonable defensive solidity, we’ll be comfortably midtable. Sadly I think that’s all this season will be despite all the excitement...

All fair points. I think I’m just trying to be positive to delude myself!
