The above cold water spout has given my above proposal absolutely no positive application at all. A qualifying competition, as every European sporting nation depends on, for its income , and as a basis to qualify internationally will reinstate the winning requirement to progress instead of the self perpetuating, entitlement, of the everlasting and eternally failing unappealingly amorphous car crash we have now. I have been saying this since Regional rugby was first mooted. David Buttress has righly demanded a return to core DNA of Welsh rugby, so at least the bills can be paid from income of a wider base from the roots of which success will grow again. Why persist with decades of failure and not return to the core from which the glotry days sprang? The Regions have been a Disaster or Wales!!

Spreading what little Welsh talent there is among 10 or 12 traditional clubs would result in Welsh teams being hammered in European competitions.
Playing each other (they wouldn't be allowed en masse into the current league) wouldn't provide the players with the competition required to play international rugby.
The clubs couldn't afford international quality players in any case so Welsh players of a decent standard would seek employment outside Wales and wouldn't be eligible for selection.

The 25 cap rule is much maligned, but it does serve to keep a lot of players in Wales. Our regional game isn’t great but can you imagine what it would be like if the rule didnt exist and players were able to bail out and still be eligible for Wales? The national team could benefit from players playing in other leagues but the regional game would be much weaker (unless there was a huge injection of cash) and could even end up in a death spiral.
Can you imagine the caliber of player we’d have left if the rule didn’t exist?
