Cardiff Rugby Club Set For Administration

That’s why I don’t favour it as the next step. Dai from up the valley will put up with two thrashings, three at most before he goes back to watching village rugby. Big sponsors won’t want to be associated with empty stadiums and the format will die very quickly.

A more level playing field needs to be created, like it most certainly was when the Liberty would be packed out for the top European games. The English clubs have since been allowed to run away with spending, and I don’t know why because the country is large enough to fill the talent pool, and we’ve now got the situation where they are going bust, but miles ahead of Welsh and Scottish club rugby. I had a look at the figures, total debt of English Premiership teams is £250m, eye watering numbers in football let alone rugby, and none of the top ten are profitable. Bridging the gap to the English game is key, but I think England teams have to step down more than Welsh regions step up. Stronger salary caps would help hugely with sustainability, whilst not necessarily impacting on international performance. I hope that the respective unions can find a common solution for all home nations.
Big Dai who drinks in the Half Moon up at Tylorstown ? 😂

Ospreys v Scarlets was a decent game on Sunday, looked like there were plenty there, not sure of figure though, just had a look on the match report on BBC Sport but they don't give the attendance.

People on about getting Shaun Edwards in is laughable, he'll end up in the same boat, the game in Wales needs massive work not a top quality coach who'll be another one trying to work with his hands tied behind his back.
During the interviews at the end of the game I think they said the crowd was around 9,700.

I watch a fair bit of club rugby - usually it’s Aberavon in the Super Rugby Cymru tournament. The Wizards are struggling towards the bottom of the league while Swansea are bottom. The league is supposed to be a development league to enable young players to get experience in a competitive environment to be able to make the step up to regional rugby the future, but it’s a very uneven playing field. Aberavon have bought in to the concept and have a very young squad supplemented by around half a dozen Ospreys Academy and fringe players, Swansea have around a dozen Ospreys players and a few youngsters from Swansea Uni (they generally get the better Os players) while Bridgend have around 9/10. Some teams have very few youngsters and rely on mature old sweats which distorts the competition. IMO, the WRU got aspects of the SRC tournament wrong, they should have mandated teams had to have a certain number of youngsters players in their, match day squads for example at last 1 front row forward under 21 years of age, another front row forward 1 under 23 etc etc etc. Another issue is that there aren’t enough games.

Cardiff RFC didn’t initially apply to join the league. The 10 who did were 9 of the current teams plus Neath who were bombed out by the WRU. When the WRU reopened the process to fill the 10th spot Cardiff then applied and were successful. Ponty and Merthyr didn’t apply. I wonder if the fact that there were several Cardiff RFC old boys at the WRU had any impact?

Bridgend are a little further up, but they are below halfway in the table.

Can these O’s fringe players move back and forth between Ospreys and Aberavon/Bridgend?

Yes. When Swansea played Aberavon a few months ago I’m pretty sure there was a senior Ospreys in the Swansea team. There’s a young Ospreys Academy player called Dan Gemine at Swansea, he’s played for the Whites and the O’s this season. Aberavon signed a local lad called Rhys Thomas last season, he’s been excellent and as a result the Ospreys have picked him up, he’s played a few times but picked up a nasty injury and has been out a while.

Llandovery and Carmarthen Quins get the scarlets youngsters, Llandovery had a lad called Macs Page up there last year and he’s supposed to be an excellent prospect.

Llandovery College have a lad up there playing outside half called Carwyn Leggatt-Jones and he’s supposed to be the next “real deal”. I’ve never seen him play, but my mate who watches youth rugby says he’s really good. The lad’s dad is “Dadge” who is originally from Baglan and probably known to Darren and a few others on here.

Kiwi Moffatt wore his Black Cap as he sentenced the Wonderful Club game to Death in the Regional format that has seen the sinking of our national game ( used to be) , more dramatic and tragic than anything similar.
The self perpetuating entitlement of "Regions" over the tragically terminal collapse of immortal giants of Welsh rugby history like Bridgend, Pontypool, Pontypridd, Neath; and ironically then; the Warriors, the region with the best record itself being culled, to preserve the status of the Capital-and decades earlier, Cardiff Rugby, finished 10th out of 10 in the original Wales Merit League, but then relegation was postponed our of "similar necessity".
So now its rugby fans all over Wales that is being asked to "Give it the kiss of Life" from more hard earned cash than the Abi Habit would ever know
If the big clubs held a competition to decide who would represent the Welsh participants in the following international competitions so much the batter we would be!

I cannot speak with greater emotion than to applaud proper rugby talk about heart and soul rugby in Wales, and not "prawn sandwiches". Diolch Arglwydd Dyma FI!!

Scarlets and Ospreys published accounts recently and just like Cardiff they announced they were in the red by a similar amount of £2 million plus. WRU are probably up the spout too. Regional Rugby is not sustainable. It has to go back to the clubs and there should be a competition to decide who qualifies to represent Welsh rugby internationally the following season!

the club rugby ship has sailed a long time ago, there is no way we can turn the clock back to what we had. We can’t afford 4 regions, how on earth are we going to afford 10 or 12 clubs with squads comprising professional players? Look at the infrastructure - most of the grounds are poor in comparison to what’s available elsewhere.
I watch a lot of club rugby, there’s absolutely no way back for our clubs to compete. The WRU needs to further develop the Super Rugby Cymru tournament so that it develops players for the Regional Rugby because as it is SRC is failing.
