Ashley Williams retires

Thought he might have hung on in there until the end of the season with an eye on the Euro’s, good luck for the future.

That's a good point, but he was released by Bristol City at the end of last season and hasn't played for anyone this season, so maybe his retirement was actually last June but he didn't realise it until now. He's 36 years old, and if he doesn't want to drop down to League 1 or 2 then fair play to him.

And like everyone has said, he was outstanding for us. Is sport the only place that you can read your obituaries while you're still alive?

Bit late to this one. I liked him. He used to get quite a lot of stick for both his football and his captaincy. I always thought that was harsh and he was instrumental to what we did. Every league we climbed he stood up and got better.

I don’t think it was coincidence that us and the national team had our greatest successes in the modern era with him as captain.

A SCAFC legend imo.

Can't say I remember much of that at all, he was very well liked amongst supporters

I'd imagine that was mostly the type who moaned when we were running away with League 1, playing thrilling football in the Championship and humbling the big boys in the PL. You know the type, 'Gower is shit because he doesn't score goals, De Vries isn't good enough for League 1, de Guzman is crap...' The type you can safely ignore as knowing sweet FA.

The thing I remember him getting most stick for was his heading in the opposition penalty area and it's hard to argue with that. Made it all the sweeter when Mr fifty pence head scored against Belgium.
