Assisted Dying

The experience of other countries, particularly Canada, is that following assisted death becoming legal, palliative care budgets are slashed to the bone which leaves those who don’t want it in a desperate situation.

I’ll be very surprised if we are any different.

This is a bad idea, it’s rushed legislation and I’ll be amazed if it’s not repealed in a few years. There’s a genuine debate to be had about assisted dying with proper and detailed scrutiny and safeguarding. This wasn’t that.

Has this gone through rigorous consultation, with all the relevant parties from the ground up. Have we seen and learnt how this works in other countries for instance. Or is this MPs making it up as they go along. Forgive my ignorance as I haven't followed this debate that closely.

Nope. No public consultation. No impact assessments. None of the usual stuff that comes with major legislation like this. That stuff sounds boring, and it very often is,but there’s a reason it happens.

It really is a bad idea. Well done ECB for having a good bit of sense.

Jo"s sister said it wasnt an MPs decision it was a peoples decision, (something like that) going on what ive seen , my fear would be if passed, that the treatment/care for those who are against it would somehow suffer , the closeness of the vote should mean thered be more assesments and possible rules/law for protection put in place.

Setting aside the concerns about the legislative process, I'm all for the principle of assisted dying and I would like to have the ability to make a choice in the event it applied to me.

I agree the process has been rushed and that MPs and Lords are making decisions based on their personal views plus a very limited representation from constituents ( in the case of MPs).

Given its significance, I would think it should be for the electorate to decide based upon all the facts. We vote for Police and Crime Commisioners and hardly anyone knows who they are or gives a hoot, but we don't get to vote on Assisted Dying.

Without wishing to open a can of worms, the legislation on abortion which includes killing of conscious and sentient babies up to 24 weeks also needs relooking at. Whatever the Govt tell us, too many babies up to 24 weeks old are being killed because of parent or parental preference and not for medical reasons. Abortion is not a means of birth control in normal circumstances.

I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you you haven’t got that long left anyway.
