ATM charges in Spain

Anyone familiar with ATM charges for "brit" cards at banks/ATM's in Spain? We have always used BancoMarch to take money our with our no exchange rate charge and also no fee but a couple of weeks ago we used BancoMarch and there was a 5.50 charge even if you withdrew only 30 euros. Tried a few others in town like Caixa and Santander and they were even more expensive.

Loads of things have changed in Europe since Brexit, perfect excuse to charge Brit's anything they like.

You are correct, Darran, however I have a Spanish bank account, so it costs me feck all to make ATM withdrawals in Spain.

I had a look on the Costa Blanca Forum, a website for ex pat types in this part of the world. The consensus was the best thing to do as a tourist was to get the Wise international debit card. You can load your account with pounds sterling and then use the card in Spain to pay for things, Wise will make the conversion for you at an excellent exchange rate with no commission. In addition, you can make two ATM withdrawals per month of up to £200 each time with no charges or commissions.

I've never had one myself, I'm just passing on info.

Revolut is also the same, you can move between different currency depending on where you are and avoid fees.

We avoid the currency fees with Chase and Halifax travel but the cashpoint charged 5.5 for a withdrawal and santander wanted 7. BancoMarche did not charge for using the ATM so we were surprised and looking for alternative ATM's that don't charge for using them.

We take out a lot more than that out of the cashpoint to pay our Spanish "friends" in cash for our accommodation, taps nose, so would reach that max quite quickly.

Well, you could always do a Wise transfer to their Spanish bank account, I do it regularly from my UK to my Spanish account. Very easy and very good exchange rate.
