It’s been announced that Central Defender Ben Mee is leaving Brentford- is there any chance of us going in for him? He’s vastly experienced and at 35 a good older head to have around the dressing room. Wages probably a block but I wouldn’t mind seeing here next year especially if Darling goes. Thoughts?

He’s getting on for 36 so his mobility and all round fitness has to be looked at. However, I also think that wages will kill this off before it goes anywhere.

Personally I undertand we need experience, mixed in with youth, but we need players who are younger. We have become a retirement home, too often recently and irrelevant of people's thoughts on this, we need to continue with the trend of bringing players in who are low fee and then demand high return if bigger clubs come in.

Judging by the three players already confirmed to be joining this summer (two 23 year olds and a 19 year old), I don't think this is the way the club's recruitment team are looking at things.

Whoever steps into Darling's place will be joining the following players:

- Cabango - More than 200 games at Championship level
- Key - 274 career league games, 74 of them at Championship level with us
- Tymon - more than 200 career league games, mostly in the Championship

I don't think experience is a necessity on the pitch, can't speak to how a player like Mee coming in would affect the dressing room.

In general the direction of the club is to get in 22 year olds, or thereabouts, with the hope they increase in value with time. That's been made clear. But Sheehan has talked about the value of having experience and balance in the squad, and if there's two positions where that commodity is especially valuable, it's the centre back and DM ones. So I expect two experienced signings, not necessarily first eleven ones, to occupy these positions. The rest will continue to be players in their early twenties. Santos might be the experienced CH choice, to free up wages and transfer fees to be spent elsewhere.

Seemed a good idea a few years ago when we signed the Wolves centre back Ryan Bennett for the same reasons.
We saw how that turned out.
So for me, it’s a no

Thats a bit of revisionism in my opinion

Bennett was an excellent signing for us under Cooper. It was under Martin who forced him into a style of football that he was ill suited for that he became exposed and struggled. Even then Bennett was a model pro and didn't kick up a fuss or throw his toys out of the pram, he continued to persevere and try to win his place back in the side and ultimately (like with well over a dozen other players) Martin bombed him out of the club.
