Ian Evatt hopes Bolton Wanderers will be able to keep hold of full-back Declan John beyond the end of this season.

The 25-year-old is spending the rest of the campaign on loan at Bolton from Championship side Swansea City.

The defender has played six times for the Trotters in his loan spell so far, scoring twice and becoming a first choice selection at left-back for Evatt.

John is out of contract at the end of the season at the Liberty Stadium.

It's something which has not gone unnoticed at Wanderers and Evatt admits he would like John to stay at the University of Bolton Stadium beyond the end of this season.

Wanderers have put themselves in a position of late after an unbeaten run of six games with four wins on the spin which has taken them to within a point of the League Two play-offs.

And Evatt believes the defender will need to see signs of progression at Wanderers for them to stand a chance of making him a permanent addition.

Evatt said: “Declan’s a fantastic player. It comes down to that recruitment in January.

"We’ve lacked that player on the left hand side all season. But Dec’s come in and made it his own.

"Hopefully we can keep him fit, keep him in one piece and hopefully we can keep him at this club for the long term.

"That’s what we’re looking to do, that’s what we want, but for us to be able to sign players like him, we have to progress and he has to see that progression.

"So let’s just keep going, keep working hard and let’s see where we end up this season.”

Obviously the right club, at the right standard and the right time.
Good for him if he gets the gig.
