Compared to Guehi's comfort on the ball Wood might as well be playing with his laces tied together. That's the big difference between the PL and Championship, it's not enough to be a good defender (as Rodon has found out). Wood only really started to impress after we transitioned into a back four and he could keep things much simpler with the occasional charge forward when space opened up and tapping it to Cabango or Grimes otherwise.

Guehi's close control under pressure was so good he could have played in midfield at this level. Can't picture Wood (or Darling or Cabango) doing the same. Not quick enough with their feet or minds.

I like Wood, but hard to disagree with any of this.

Nowhere near ready for Premier League. Sad thing is, looks like his agent is trying to strike while the iron is hot.

I must admit that over the first few months of last season I didn't rate him at all & just thought he wasn't a very good footballer but he improved markedly in the new year.
How much further he can improve we'll have to see but there's plenty of potential there & I got him wrong.
Another Guehi he isn't though.

As i said Wood has the potential, there were plenty of people criticising the nervy Guehi in his early Swans appearances. Wood is still a young man in this position, but he has the size, strength and pace to make it whether he will get as good as Guehi we will see.

It will be interesting to see how he develops and if he stays with us.

I'd love to be one of those posters that goes back to old threads to bump back up.

F*Ck me, there were plenty of posters on here last year that would have given the boy away for free if they had the chance, he's now morphed into Maldini on steroids!

Our fans overrate our squad, we're comfortably rubbish most of the time, must be our water supply in South Wales.. and where was Woods pace during that 20 game period where we couldn't buy a win, he got roasted more than not last season, same as Cabango, the opposition only had to hit the ball in behind and it was curtains

The reality is that both Cabango and Wood are centre half’s, Darling can play a bit but not much of a defender, we don’t have a natural ball playing back three at the moment and we haven’t have for some time.

I like Wood i think he has something about him and hopefully he will develop here.

He came on leaps and bounds as the season got on last season, be disappointed to see him go.

Cabango had two years of being pull from pillar to post by Martin, similarly Wood and Darling had a year.
As for being caught with the ball over the top, opposition midfielders, wingers and full back give oceans of space to pick their preferred ball forward.
Our defenders being tied to must do tactics.
Three over the top balls for Darling to deal with out on the flanks,
He tried to control bouncing ball under pressure from forward, first instant out muscled while trying to control as ordered, Cabango covered, second instants no-one there to save his error, third instance, in the next game, took safe option out of play so defence could regroup against must keep the ball in play order, he was dropped next game.
At times you have to let defenders do what they know best and that is defend,
Wood, Darling and Cabango are all young competent CB, at the moment we are lucky to have them, can you really see the future relying on an aging Naughton?
