• Thank you very much | Diolch yn fawr

All at JackArmy.net would like to thank everyone who has played a part on this site over the past 25 years whether that is through writing, contributing, moderating, posting or just visting and reading.

Without any of you the work that has gone into the site would have been pointless and we will always be proud that we built, generated and managed a community that was such a big part of the Swansea City supporting life for so long.

It has been a pleasure to bring to you the site for so long but the time is now right to turn the lights out for the last time but we do it both with a heavy heart and a sense of pride driven by the so many messages received since we announced the closure.

The site will remain here for a period until we archive and mothball it for the last time later this summer but all aspects are in a read only format.

Thank you though for all the memories

    Phil Sumbler
    Owner, jackarmy.net

If any player could be said to have done his best to earn the money he was on it was Ayew. There wasn't a single game, or at least so few that none come immediately to mind, you could point at where he gave less than everything he had.

Should have been captain. Was in all but technicality.

Ayew and Bony were on similar wages when we came down and the wages of both crippled us for years to come (and arguably still continue to do so even though they are both long gone) but the impact that both players had couldn't be any different both in terms of results and performances.

Wilf is still the best striker I've ever seen play for the club. No matter what I can't hold his second spell against him.

He never came back as the same player who left. I still have memories of fans from other clubs creaming about him in their forums, the Crystal Palace forum in particular I remember when he metaphorically destroyed their centre halves in a masterclass lone forward hold up display.

There was also that photo of him walking past two Chelsea defenders who were down on the floor injured

That time he rolled Kyle Walker and blasted that 25 yarder into the bottom corner past Joe Hart too

Ayew was quite clearly a player too good for the Championship.

Much might be made of his wage and the lack of foresight to have a relegation clause to cut down his salary but he dragged his teammates through results and was the main reason we reached the playoffs on both occasions under Cooper and he never gave less than 100% which is more than can be said for many players who find themselves playing in a division lower than they deserve to be in

I still think if we had Ayew under Potter that we would have walked into the playoffs. Ayew on one side, James on the other, Celina through the middle and McBurnie up top would have pissed most of the division. The main thing Potter's team lacked was a winner who knew how to win and get his teammates's heads back in the game if they are gone.
Missing that Penalty against the Bees cost us big style tho.

He made up for that though by cutting in and curling into the bottom corner from outside the box
Even if we had scored that penalty it wouldn't have saved us in the second leg, Frank had done an excellent job of railing his side against the injustices of the first leg and we did not live with their intensity, they were out of sight by the second minute of the second half.

Wasn't his first game back with us a Carabao Cup game against a lower league team at home? I remember there being an audible disapproval when his name was read out and/or when he was subbed on, then he won the whole crowd over by playing like it was a Champions League final.

This game I believe.

He'd been out on loan the season before and a lot of people didn't want him back. He then proceeded to carry the team for much of the next two seasons.

That's the one, cheers.

I'm trying to think of another game I've been at where a player has won the crowd over so comprehensively by the final whistle. Best I can think of is Leon Knight's hat-trick debut, but the crowd weren't against him at the start of that game like they were with Ayew. There's also the season opening defeat away to Oldham under Martinez, but that was more how the whole team played rather than one player.

One thing you could never ever accuse Ayew of was being unprofessional and disrespecting the badge he played for

His wages may have hamstrung us for half a decade and we are still recovering from that but thats not his fault, I have nothing but respect for the way he did everything he could to drag us kicking and screaming back to the Premier League
