Covid Reflection Day

Some jobs are best played out at home, someone l know goes to office 2/3 a week and the other days are spent at home and they they end up working longer hrs as well very often.
It’s not me by the way, couldn’t do my job from the house, 🤣
That’s basically me. I work longer hours at home than I do on office days. My choice of course but I get way more done too.

As others have said it's not a black and white issue. While I am a strong proponent of working from home (my average weeks is 2 days in office, 3 days at home), I can see there are advantages to office working. Having everyone in a team working in one location can encourage teamwork and lead to better communication, it's also a benefit for new staff to be surrounded by their new teammates.

Those employers who are forcing everyone back to the office when the job can be done just as well at home are proving themselves to be either dinosaurs, control freaks who want to micro manage, or bad at their jobs in another way. A good manager can develop strategies to determine who is working effectively from home and who is coasting. If they can't do that, they probably shouldn't be in their job.

Also, the people I've worked with over the years who were truly talented at minimising their work output could do it just as well in the office as they could at home, so I don't buy that argument.

A four day week is my next mission. The wheels of my HR chums are already being turned.

Companies are realising that they only need to rent half the office space that they've been paying for historically with half the staff working from home.

Big savings to be made.

This has to be the way forward. The places that have adopted this have shown an increase in productivity amongst their teams.

Four days should be four days as well. None of this working 37.5 hours over four days nonsense.

I think that will be a step too far for some HR teams. We might have to see a little stretch of Monday to Thursday hours as a first step.

I suppose it all depends on the industry as well.
It’s certainly within reach within automotive manufacturing. Car plants will work 24/7 (with the exception of a Saturday night) in some cases, but the office staff hours are not aligned with blue collar hours. It just needs a little bit of open mind thinking and some organisation, definitely a theme to keep exploring.

Probably not surprising given our demographics but there are a few dinosaurs on her. The world is changing in ways I don’t understand and/or approve of so it must change back to suit me.

Folk don’t like change, they feel threatened by it. Folk also don’t like seeing others having work ‘perks’ which are out of reach for them (usually due to the industry type).

Absolutely! It pisses me right off that I can't work from home but my wife can! 😫

My wife works in education, but I’ve stopped giving her the satisfaction of knowing how envious I am of her quarter of a year holiday entitlement.
