...when bringing back presents for family members from holidays was 'de riguer'? I was reminded of this because I'm staying in the house of my mother, recently passed away, while I'm over in Baglan for a few days to take in the Swans match. Hanging on the kitchen wall is a bloody big Greek ornamental plate, and I suddenly remembered that I hauled that all the way back on ferries and plane from Paros for my parents as a gift in the early eighties.

Anyone else got examples of things we don't do anymore, which young folk would think are barmy now?

On that theme, sending postcards.

Great thread.

I remember part of the thrill from going abroad wads the exotic items like lemon Fanta which wasn't available in the UK at the time.

Part of the enjoyment was the buying of gifts for friends and families.

I still bring fridge magnets back from wherever I go. Last one came from Franschhoek, next pick up will be from Verona. They drive the wife nuts as she has to keep them dust free (her choice).

Sorry to hear about your mother.
Yes, I brought one of those plates back from Greece and a small brass Eiffel Tower. My uncle bought a donkey cigarette dispenser back from Spain in the sixties. Cigarettes used to come out of it’s arse if I remember correctly.

Here's another one. Taking a transistor radio into school to listen to the FA Cup draw, when it used to be broadcast at lunchtime on a Monday. Only if the Swans were in it, of course.

We went to the west coast of US when the kids were younger and did the whole tourist thing in San Francisco, Vegas and LA. We brought so much stuff back I’m surprised they allowed us on the plane. Favourite was the photos we had done at the Startrek exhibition in Vegas when we all took turns on the captain’s chair and other places on the bridge of the USS ENTERPRISE.
Kids loved it to be fair.

Prior to each radio draw we would usually make our own version using team names on screwed up bits of paper.

We had one of those in my parents house.

Pull it’s ears back and it would eject a ciggie from its rear orifice used to hold about 10

That was the one! 😂

Taking camera film in to be developed and then waiting a week for them to be ready.

Winding cassette tape back in with a pencil after the car stereo had chewed the crap out of it.
