Does Football Fatigue Really Exist in Today's Game? And To What Extent?

Bear with me on this one. With us having to play Preston next week and having 10 days rest vs 3 Days for them due to FA Cup, it got me thinking.

We hear about football fatigue and granted I get tired from going shopping and takes me a day to recover 😂😂. But other than mental strength and or tactics, we really have no excuse next week.

Dare I say it, when Martin came into the Swans I remember him saying, his style of play is designed to wear teams down. And while the game progressed we would get more opportunities. But I never saw any proof in this and in fact, we was the one leaking goals at the end.

So my point being with all the technology, stats etc. Can we blame fatigue or bad coaching?

I think it’s definitely a thing. It’s why you see the bigger teams utilising their squads fully these days. Three games a week for seven months a year (plus another month for the top players in summer international tournaments) isn’t sustainable really.

It will be interesting to see how we perform on Tuesday. I know it's not as simple as us being less tired. But you would like to think if anything even if Preston do make wholesale changes we will be better prepared. I know Williams is not here but the fear of swans not turning up scares me as we have had history as of late. Will be interesting.

Fatigue and muscle inflammation is very real. I used to play 2 footy matches and a cricket match in the same week. Now I play seniors league footy one a week and takes a week to recover.

Pro footballers today play more athletic football especially at the top level, you don't see a Jan Molby type these days

Muscle strains are far more common now and the pitches are far more firmer especially the hybrids.

Also training methods have changed along with gym workouts. Clubs like Spurs and Newcastle struggle to keep their squads injury free.

Really insightful. As a non athlete it's always intrigued me. 👍👍👍👍. Why do you think Spurs or Newcastle have these issues? Bad training methods? I know all teams will go through patches and we went through a bad patch a while back. I presume it also comes down to back room staff etc

The wealthiest clubs with the biggest, deepest squads have a huge advantage in the modern game. They can rotate without discernible weakening of their starting 11 and have a fresher squad for the business end of the season.
Many years ago clubs won the league only using 14 or 15 players but all clubs were in the same boat back then so tired players were playing against tired players.

Dare I say it, Williams was always banging on about players coming on and making an impact in subs, but rarely if on 1 hand did we see it impact and help the team in rotation. Though 0 doubt that is to do with fitness and more tactics. Insightful feedback, thanks for that 👍👍👍

Saw Obafemi the other week, he looked a very similar shape to Molby .

What a waste of a player. I really liked him when he was with us. But threw it all away on attitude. Now it's appears it's burgers and chips he doesn't throw away. Maybe I'll try my luck playing with my belly's 😂 if he can do it, why not 😂. Add Christie into this. Not that I am body shamming and all 😉😉

The impression I get of Williams is he is very reserved in his approach with everything from how we played to rotating players.

Interesting thought. We will never know. I know many have said he was a nice person behind the scenes, but his tactics like Martin react of arragance. Martin would not adapt and 1 way was his way and Williams, I'm trying to figure out.

I thought he was the complete opposite to Martin, personality wise. Whereas I couldn't stand Martin, I like Williams and really wanted him to succeed until it was evident he was out of his depth.

I'll remember his time with us as being ultra conservative in his approach to everything.

Personally I thought Martin was more flashy and trying to be more about himself publicly and threw players and the club under the bus more publicly. Williams, I always thought he was more honest, but his cloak came off and with every interview it was clear he was a person who either was playing us all or didn't know he was doing it. Subtle digs and lack of management was his undoing. Of course with West Brom. Good points you make and interesting how we all perseive people.

They were both much of a muchness IMO. Quite pally and jovial when things were going well but prickly when challenged (which didn't happen often enough to either of them) and remarkably rapid when it came to trying to deflect blame.

Basically the same manager.
