Fine you don't have a definition of deserved winners who didn't win but I do, Hungary in 54, Portugal in 66, Holland in 74, Brazil in 82 etc

I think every long-term poster would have put good money on you having a 'deserved winner' for 1966. I can't think why...
Because Portugal had won every game including beating back to back champions Brazil and European powerhouse at the time Hungary in their group, Portugal then had their semi final switched from Goodison because England thought they would lose up there (Portugal played their group games on Merseyside and Manchester) and they had to travel overnight on the milk train, no proper training nothing and then they won the 3rd place game.

You forgot to mention that the player who was possibly the best in the world at the time, Eusebio, had the sh*t kicked out of him all tournament.

Seriously though, with enough time, anyone with half a brain could put together an argument for a more deserving winner for every competition in every sport ever. You can use stats, relative strength of opponents, injuries suffered, etc...

It's why deserved winner is nonsense. Everyone remembers that Holland were almost certainly the best team at both the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, but they couldn't get it done and that's that. I don't hear Dutch people banging on about how they were 'deserved winners', they know they f*cked it up.

Portugal were done, not just unlucky on the pitch, the English done them by switching the game at the last minute (it was seen as a home game for Portugal and an away game for England who hadn't been outside of North London), Scousers are still raging about it because they had tickets for the game, the English will use every trick in the book to try and win, they are known for it.

There's the anti-English sentiment we were all waiting for. You're not wrong in this example, but England had their captain falsely arrested in Mexico, were knocked out of a World Cup by the one of most obvious handballs in the history of the sport and failed to qualify for a World Cup because Koeman wasn't shown an incredibly obvious red card in qualifying.

Extend it to other countries and you have the 'Disgrace of Gijon', a German keeper escaping punishment for assault against a French player, a Welsh referee's terrible decision to disallow a Brazil goal, Joe Jordan robbing Wales of qualification... The list goes on.

I'm not wrong you say, yes I know I'm not wrong.

As regards 1966, I think Portugal were the best team in it and skulduggery and home advantage won it for England, I'm not been biased in any shape or form I genuinely think Portugal deserved to win that World cup, if you think England deserved to win (what was called the robbery of the century by the South Americans, they think that English and German officials colluded to make sure England and West Germany were in the final), the switching of the semi final at the last minute to Englands advantage against Portugal and the ghost goal in the final that the linesmen when asked on his death bed if he thought it was a goal apparently simply said 'Stalingrad' then that is up to you, but imo England did not deserve to win that World cup.

Well done for ignoring everything I posted in favour of responding to something I didn't write. I didn't say I thought England deserved to win, although I would have thought my feelings on the idea of 'deserve' were obvious by now.

Anyway, moving on, let's hope for some more crazy games tonight as the actual football starts again. Who are you going for tonight Skip?

I never said you did say and truth be told I don't know what your idea of deserve is.

Two games that could go either way tonight, I will plump for Spain (no certs) and Belgium (I think Italy are favourites and I have their defence in my fantasy football team so could do with them getting through but I will go with Belgium) and Denmark (no certs) and England (England by 2 clear goals) tomorrow.
England are the only ones that should win with any certainty.

How the fck is any team a certainty in this tournament? England could have a man sent off early then what?? This tournament is a nightmare to predict.

Next up we have..

Spain vs Switzerland
Belgium vs Italy

After my last predictions were spot on, I'm going for a Spain and Belgium semi final

Birmingham City 🏈 v Swansea City 🦢
