How the feck was that a penalty? No contact!

Much as I hate Stirling for what he did in the cup match, have watched the "trip" last night a few times now and just prior to it he had a mega push in the back, which is what the pen could have been given for.

The slght push was after he started his fall to the ground.

They wouldn't be allowed to have an English VAR, in the same way they couldn't have an English ref or linesman. Anyone suggesting otherwise is deluded.

The ref on ITVs commentary team was English so perhaps that's what you were thinking about

Given that players these days play for penalties (and fouls in general) I think there needs to be a major shift in refereeing. I think they should assume a player has dived until proven otherwise. And they need to start booking players - they've only made a token effort so far. Sterling's comment - "he touched me so it was a penalty" - just shows how ridiculous it's become.

Somebody made a good point elsewhere about the penalty. It was the referee who ballsed it up. They've been told to only give a penalty if they're certain because if VAR sees something they missed, they'll ask them to have a look at the monitor.

The reason being VAR can only overturn it if he's made an obvious error, so play it safe and don't give the penalty if he's not 100% sure, with VAR as his safety net if he's missed something clear and obvious. Better to not give the penalty than give a soft one which VAR can't overturn. Think the occasion got to him in the end.

Given that football has always been known as a contact sport it is a ridiculous comment by Sterling.
