They’re massive these days aren’t they? Back I the day, there was the manager, assistant, physio and one sub. Nowadays benches are huge. And what’s with these iPads and flip charts when subs are being made? Has the game become more complicated from 40 odd years ago?

No doubt some of it for show by people wanting to look important, but clearly the game is far more complicated tactically than it was in the 70s/80s or even early years of the Premier League in the 90s.

Doesn’t mean that great players/managers wouldn’t be great now as they’d adapt.

Whether people think that football is better than it was in (pick any time period) as a result of these changes is down to personal preference.

I think that a it has a lot to do with the big money in today’s football - and success is achieved by fractions, hence all the people and screens.

You don’t really believe that do you? Even if you don’t buy into the technology and analysis aspect making a huge difference then the back pass rule and change to offside has made a huge difference.

As an aside, no word of a lie, I remember seeing KOL in the middle of town a couple of times when we were still playing at the Vetch, midweek, in his Swans tracksuit, shoving a Greggs pasty in his mouth. One time he caught my eye, and I thought ‘OMG that’s Kris O’Leary’ before his eyes dropped to look at the pasty which was hanging out of his mouth and he minced off in a guilty fashion.
