Professional footballers who have spent most of the last four years (or however long they've been at the club) being drilled to not take any chances. If a risky shot is on, then to pass it instead. There were signs that they were being deprogrammed, but today was very much a backwards step.
The groans and annoyance from the stands every time the shot on was not taken or a player turned backwards instead of attacking the space spoke volumes.
"A backwards step" should be rephrased to a backward pass.. and we're 2-0 down and we're ambling around and delaying play like it's 0-0.. no urgency.. the data says pace trumps possession on every metric (As super Russ would say)
