Hourihane and Woodman.

Hell of a lot work needed to be done before we should think about next season

Cool, go and start a thread about that then. 👍

Don't like talking about next season's transfer plans as we're a long way from this season being over. Having said that, IF we were promoted and Ayew would be open to a 1-year contract at a wage the club are comfortable with, I'd say it would be a no-brainer. Given how Cooper seems reluctant to ever take him off the pitch, I think he'd agree.

Hourihane done more than expected since he joined. Sure he had a quiet one vs Forest but he certainly does have one hell of a magic peg on him and I'd be surprised if he doesn't go on to bang in some quality goals. A real class free kick specialist is something we have been missing since we sold Gylfi.

I'm not sure Hourihane is the type of player to run the game from midfield in the way that Gibbs-White did for us. He's much more of a Sigurdsson type player - i.e. a set-piece specialist and major goal threat from long-range shots. We desperately needed a player to do this from midfield, and he's done the business.

Hourihane is very much like Gylfi. They both rarely get passed the front man, and score most of their goals from behind players.

I’m going to be controversial... Hourihane hasn’t had as much influence on games as I would have thought. I thought he would come in and control games in the middle, but he seems to have little influence in there, bar stating the obvious of popping up and scoring vital goals.

Woodman on the other hand, yes, yes and yes.

I wouldn’t be so sure about not being able to get Guehi ... I think with Tuchel they’ll look for the big name signings rather than youth products. If we could get him around £15 million I would jump on it.

£15 million will probably be the whole budget for next season if we go up.

I don't wish to knock arguably our best player, but Andre would take a lot less out of himself if he thought of passing occasionally. It would be probably better for the team too. In the opposition penalty area last night trying to bustle his way through two defenders when Lowe was free to his right. He finished up having his shot blocked. I'd hate to lose him though.

Knowing Chelsea they will look to spend to bring in an experienced "ready to go" defender in the summer and will look to loan out Guehi to a premier league side to build up some experience for him. The ideal solution in all worlds would be for us to get promoted and for Chelsea to loan him to us for another season.

Woodman is one of three keepers who basically are demanding the number 1 jersey and in fairness he is probably the furthest away from making that position his own at Newcastle. I would rate our chances of signing him in the summer if we got promoted as maybe 7 in 10.

Hourihane originally Villa said they expect him back next season but with him being 31 in the summer I think they would be willing to listen to offers for him. So long as his early loan spell form doesn't fall away then I would definitely want to bring him back too.

I may end up in a minority here but if we went up and decided to keep Ayew I would be bitterly disappointed and believe it to be the wrong decision, he is not a Premier League player any more.

I think he'd be a decent option from the bench, but let's be honest he's not going to take a big hit on wages he's currently getting to sit on the bench, he will go elsewhere have a nice sign on fee and decent wages elsewhere.

The Ayew's a very good at the business side, he already knows where he's off next season.

Funny init? I’m more of an Ayew fan than I ever was. He should be captain IMO, his work rate is immense and I’ve never seen another forward take so much pressure of a defence. He has a calmness in possession, confidence in himself and the know how that only quality players have to make space for himself when under pressure. His experience and influence on his teammates has been one of the keys to Cooper’s success.

Having said all that, Premier League? Not sure. I think I’d like to see him in the squad but for someone else to take over the starter role. Then again, every good team needs a talisman.....

Agreed.

The thing for me is you can see the toll this season is taking on Ayew already. He s often missing in games and that is not knocking him as he can still come up with the goods from nowhere at times but you don't get to carry that kind of luxury in the next division up.

Off the bench? Maybe, wouldn't argue with it as a concept but Mr Ayew I think will be abroad somewhere next season, one last decent pay packet

I wouldn't want anyone on Ayew's pay packet anywhere near us next season whether we go up or not as it would show that we have learned nothing.

Hourihane can't crack it with the Villa, so he'd have a lot to prove. I'd look for another loan for him, which Villa may not want to go for. Then only buy if Scott can't find someone better. Guehi, yes every time, loan or better, permanent....but only if the wages wouldn't break us when we go back down...see Ayew...

Woodman. Maybe. Can't help myself but I like my goalkeepers to be more commanding and decisive. Better distribution would be nice too. But he's coming along and will probably have his personal sights set higher than us now, while his stock is high.

On all the evidence, got to trust the club on transfer strategy now, so I think they'll make good calls, whichever league we are in.

Unfortunately I think your spot on.

The last time we went up we struck it lucky by having a team that was surprisingly comfortable at Premier league standard, let's not forget that the Championship back then was miles ahead in terms of quality than it is now.

Anyway, enjoy the ride aye 👍

I hope if we go up whatever the budget we manage it prudently and if that means relegation and a more sustainable club then so be it. It's painful but the PL money can make a huge difference and we have seen how much it can hurt dropping out with average players on PL wages that are very difficult to shift on for anything other than bargain basement prices.
