Sad story - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50338260

Remember some of the Dundee United success in the 1980s - its amazing when you think now what they achieved in Europe during that period - European Cup semi final and UEFA Cup final as well as Champions of Scotland.

RIP

Always had a soft spot for Dundee United after having a bath towel with their badge(that's another story).

Last summer my daughter made a friend who's dad was a United fan, in his hayday was the heavy success of their European adventure. We talked football and i enjoyed his stories of Barcelona, trips by boat to the final and the gaffer Jim McLean.

RIP Jim McLean.

Very sad news. Used to follow Dundee Utd closely as a kid (chose them because of their brilliantly named and slightly nuts - in the same way as Higuita and Chilavert - keeper, Hamish McAlpine) and still look out for their results now. McLean was manager and chairman for years and years, and brought them unprecedented success, the highlight probably being beating Barcelona over two legs in Europe. Their youth system was phenomenal during McLean’s tenure too, producing the likes of Richard Gough, Duncan Ferguson, Kevin Gallagher, Christian Dailly and Billy McKinlay, to name but a few. Not bad for a relatively small club. RIP.

Scottish teams in Europe were and to a degree still are a joy to follow.
