A little poem I found soon after my mum was diagnosed. I keep a paper copy in my wallet so it’s with me at all times and it has helped me to come to terms with what is an awful situation. It brings a tear to my eye every time I read it.

Don’t ask me to remember,
don’t try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you’re with me,
kiss my cheek and hold my hand.

I’m confused beyond your concept,
I’m sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you,
to be with me at all cost.

Do not lose your patience with me,

Just remember that I need you,

Really sad to read about Tosh. Its a cruel condition and now that my wife and I are in our 7th decade, I pray neither of us will be affected by it for the sake of our family.

Such a good post. Lost both my parents to dementia. To say it struck a chord is an understatement. Your last sentence is bang on too.

Yeah, my father had vascular dementia for the last four years of his life.
Just accept whatever behaviour you experience or comments made. Never contradict someone who has dementia with facts. It's pointless and can be unintentionally cruel in some cases.
It was hard as a family and it broke me at times watching my mother desperately looking for the man she married 62 years earlier.

My grandfather had dementia before he passed two years ago

He spent the last few months of his life in and out of the hospital and half the time didn't even remember who my grandmother was. One of those things I wouldn't wish on anybody, can only be terrifying as well to know that its happening to you.

By the end as horrible as it sounds to say I think many of my family was relieved when it was over, the emotional strain on the whole immediate family was horrible and my nan spent more days in tears than not when the days he was cognizant became far less than the days when he wasn't.
