Losing Weight

Many thanks again everyone. As Boydy suggested, I think I may start a 'Weight Loss' thread on Jan 1st. Pacey's app looks like a goer, I am going to buy a rowing machine next week. I like walking, but have never really enjoyed running. The exercise I love the most is swimming, and I will be heading over Penyrheol pool again next year. I used to do 60 lengths a day there in my twenties but had to buy 2XL swimming shorts in Tesco the other day.

I think, for machines, the cross trainer is the consensual best all round trainer Bryn. That said, I did get pretty fit using a rower when I was too injured to run, but I got stupid competitive with myself. I also found 10 minutes each alternating, rower, cross trainer and bike in the gym at fairly high throttle gave me some good fitness results, and I’d finish with a swim. Weights too, if you want to change body shape. You can’t target areas for fat reduction whatever some plans might promise. So there’s always the danger of retaining the same shape and going from being a big fat man into a small fat man. Diet is key though, and my downfall. So I get to my best ‘feeling comfortable’ weight and then immediately set about f***ing it up. It does my own head in.

I’m currently 4 or 5 kg over and I’ve lost a lot of fitness so I’ll keep a close eye on your motivational thread. Basically I want to be like Fbreath. Mid 60s with the same trouser size as mid 20s and running 42 minute 10ks again (that bit is not going to happen, I’d more than happily settle for a 22 minute 5k). I did get same trouser size at 60 as 20 but then it all went tits up. I suppose I don’t really care that much about those targets anymore, which is probably why I’ll never do it. Life’s too short as long as you’re healthy and the trend is not going the wrong way.

I don’t agree with weighing daily by the way. Fluctuations can be disheartening and false. I’d say once a week at the same time, or even not weighing at all. Go by your trouser fit, plus shirt collar. I accept that’s a totally personal view and certainly not a “right” one.

Good luck mate. I know someone that has gone down 4 stone, diet and weights over a year, no real cardio as he has a damaged knee, and I would have backed money against. I’m all cardio and bodyweight HIIT, so I think anything works if you are consistent. Anyway, the sheer joy on his face when he bought a slim fit suit at the end was amazing. It does get increasingly hard, as the first few pounds should fall off (mostly water), but after that, consistency in diet and exercise over a sensible time that can be maintained permanently is key I would say.

Anyway lads and lasses, thanks for the therapy. 🤣 Merry Christmas.

The other thing I would recommend if you can is join a gym that does group classes.

I belong to NPTCBC Celtic Leisure and look to do 3 circuits classes a week. It’s great for overall body exercise as it includes HIIT, weights, body weight exercises etc. Plus exercises you wouldn’t do alone at home, it’s slightly competitive as you have times to try and do x amount of reps in a set time plus the personal push you put on yourself to beat previous attempts.

You need to stick at it as the first 3 or 4 classes will seem like hell. I’ve seen plenty of people come once or twice and never see them again. There are people that go of all ages and fitness levels.

Walking is as good as running and better than driving, if you get the opportunity to walk to the shops or just an hr spare go for a walk. You end up talking to dog walkers a lot but i think if you do a walk most days that is enough to get the heart beat going and get the heart working, it also starts your metabolism burning up energy, a walk before breakfast is a great start to the day. My mate walks to local pool does a swim before work and is done for the day exercise wise.

If you haven’t got a device for measuring activity most smart phones have something like Samsung health which measure your steps and you can be linked into my fitness pal to give you a very good profile of the calories burned through movement.

Get a manual garage door, Bryn. The pounds will melt off. ;)

Seriously though, exercise and monitor calories - there’s not much more to it. I can heavily recommend Garmin fitness watches.

Exercise can just be a walk a couple of times a week, or mix it up with a cycle or a run. Never be frightened to look like a tw*t running - everyone has been there starting out. I run about 50-60km a week (and have for the last 3 or 4 years) and it’s honestly the best thing I ever took an interest in. I’ve had my mental health struggles down the years and nothing has come close in terms of feeling better about myself. Fresh air too - treadmills are convenient but they don’t come close for me.

Limit booze to Sat/Sun.

And my personal opinion is never weigh yourself. I haven’t weighed myself in years, but had to weigh-in at a recent medical - I was pretty chuffed with my weight when I saw it. I just go by how I feel and the encouragement of fitting into smaller clothes etc. Nothing worse than busting a gut exercising all week and seeing that you’ve lost 1 pound (or put on weight!). Obviously many reasons for this but for me personally it has a negative effect.

Good luck Bryn!

Thank you so much everyone for all your constructive advice. You are all top fellers. I will try my best in the New Year. I am looking to lose about 4 stone.. (I know) 🤔😕

Bryn.

You have motivated me. I am the wrong side of 17 stone. Need to lose at least 4 stone, for many health reasons.

Why dont you start a thread end of the month or January 1st. Planet Swans weight watchers. I would willingly put my starting weight and once a week update. Could be the motivation I need.

I think we all know what we need to do to lose the pounds, less beer, less crap food, exercise a bit more. Any one of those will make a difference, all 3 would smash it.

I am up for it Bryn, join your journey. See what 2022 brings. Phil can cheer us on, having done amazing himself. Dont think I would do the 90 mins walking over the hills first thing in the morning, but it is what works for the individual.

Just an idea.

Happy Christmas everyone.

I’d happily contribute.

I got on the scales this morning and was disturbed so see the screen showing 'one at a time'.

That was all the motivation I needed for 10k steps along the coastal path. Will do the same tomorrow.

Target weight loss is three stone. January looks like it's a case of working from home which is a positive in terms of cutting out late night dinners, but I will have to steer well clear of the snack cupboard which is still well laden with Christmas fare.

I'm going for a walk now to get the papers. Will have a few drinks this evening, and tomorrow as it is the weekend, but Monday will be the start of everything for me. I will need to right down my weight and get a system going.

Thanks for all the advice everybody and Happy New Year.

Got on the scales this morning, I have put weight on but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I am going to set myself an initial target of losing 1.5 stones and will review from there.

Went out with er indoors for a long New Years Day walk with earlier, got to keep it up now.

Just reading this thread as I munch my way through another hundred-weight of Quality Street, looking down at my ever increasing Derby. It has prompted me to finally do something about my weight which like Bryn will start on Monday. So thank you for the kick up the 'arris I needed!

So will cut out the Christmas junk, weigh myself and have a target of 70k steps a week and will report back then.

Working from home has resulted in a pretty my lifestyle becoming sedentary so need to act upon it before it becomes too difficult. Best of luck to all embarking on this journey!

The last line of what you said is very true - I was far more active when I was out and about for work and even more so when I stayed away for work as I was much more likely to run in the evening

Once I have finished my self isolation I am heading back towards fitness and weight loss all over again - it goes on much easier than it comes off or stays off!

I'm quite surprised that you guys weigh yourself with regularity. Not something that I would do...but if it works for you then good luck.

Someone has already mentioned judgement via feel of clothes. I don't need to weigh in order to verify that I am a little bit over fighting weight, my shirt collars are tight and the belt needs to go out a notch. On a positive note, the shoes still fit.

I lost 100 lbs back in 2010/11 on the atkins diet.(Keto) Its the only diet I ever did that worked and I have had weight problems all my life although since then I have pretty much stayed the same weight because I still use atkins principles.

Sham, what meals did you make on the Keto diet?
A work colleague is staring it today funnily enough.
