Players on an NFL practice squad earn a minimum of $8,400 for each week of the NFL season. However, they are not signed to guaranteed contracts, and are not guaranteed future weekly salary if they are cut from the team. Its only a rare few who earn the big money.

The journo who wrote that may be the Mirror's American sports correspondent, but he either doesn't understand how NFL contracts work or has omitted the details for the sake of making the story more interesting.
Rees-Zammit will not earn $900k a year for the next 3 years. The details will come out soon and it will all be about the guaranteed money and signing bonus. If the signing bonus is higher than expected, it will suggest that there was some competition between teams to sign him. The guaranteed money won't be that much, meaning at some point (likely this August) they'll rip up that contract and sign him to a 1-year deal to be on their practice squad.
He probably will earn more this season than he did at Gloucester, but he will come nowhere near trebling his money.

Jarryd Hayne was a Australian Rugby League player that signed with The 49 ers. His contract numbers look similar and you will see he was guaranteed only a percentage of his "3 year" contract. He was binned after 8 games.
"On 3 March 2015, the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) announced they had signed undrafted free agent Hayne to a three-year contract with a base salary of US$1,575,000 over duration of the contract and a US$115,000 guarantee should he not make 53-man roster in his first preseason"

Bold statement here but as a running back he will never see the field. Running backs are also 10 a penny and get injured all too frequently. They are not getting paid as they once were. (See Derrick Henrys latest deal and he is a beast)I would hold more hope for him as WR.
The odds aren't great either way.

That's 1 in 7 IPP athletes that ever play in an actual NFL game(preseason doesn't count) by my rudimentary mathematics.

I genuinely hope he succeeds. There have been several Jocks that have made it as kickers and few Saes players but so far no Welsh. (I checked there was one Welsh born kicker called Allan Watson that played 4 games in 1970
