Manchester United are set to pay a £10 million fine as a result of not winning Wednesday's Europa League final against Tottenham. Failing to meet Adidas sponsorship agreement that requires them to qualify for Champions League at least once every 2 seasons. So they have to pay Adidas 10m

The defeat to Spurs also means that the Old Trafford outfit will miss out on a major windfall of cash that they would have received by qualifying for the Champions League.

Not only will this provide yet another stumbling block when it comes to the club's ability to keep up with FFP, it comes months after Sir Jim Ratcliffe suggested the club could have gone bust without further investment.

They are absolutely donald ducked having failed to win qualification to the Championa League last night. I was wondering towards the end of last season whether I'd seen them suffer enough and maybe it wasn't entertaining anymore, but then I came to my senses.

I might be wrong on this, and I'm sure if I am someone will correct me, but I'm fairly sure this is the first time since Fergie left that they have gone two consecutive years without Champions League football.

As the article above suggests, that's going to cause them no end of financial issues. Adidas won't be their only contract with such clauses.

Can easily see them doing an Arsenal and being 4-5 years without CL qualification, the state they're in right now.

I'm afraid that's an urban myth. They would have been relegated whether he'd scored or not.

Man United need to stop thinking they're one of the top clubs and thinking throwing money at their team will help them. Decisions like paying Rashford £350k a week and spending £80m on Antony are why they're Donald Ducked.

They need to sell their highest earners or let their contracts expire and start buying players at a lower price point who have the potential to be worth more in the future. A signing like Huisjen for Bournemouth last summer for example. If they go about things in the right way, they may find their way back to the top at some point. If they carry on going about things like they have since Fergie retired, they'll probably get even worse.

The rest of us owe the Glazers a big thank you. If they hadn't saddled United with so much debt they'd be spending on a level to make Man City blush.

That day Birmingham beat Norwich 2-1, but Law having scored meant that United were relegated that evening even though they had a game in hand over Brum. Had they drawn they could conceivably escaped with their last game although it would have needed a huge win on the last day. As he said "I got them relegated".

True, they lost their last game anyway, but they had already been relegated.

If United had beaten City in the penultimate game AND won their last game they would still have been relegated. They finished 5 points behind Birmingham (2 points for a win).

i think you are both right? Nobody on the pitch knew that Birmingham had won, so when Law scored, he knew he had relegated them no matter what. At the start of the matches, they could have caught Brum with 2 wins vs 2 losses. So even though he didn’t relegate them, in his mind he had! I can see him flicking the ball into the net now and realising what he’d done.
