Speculation arose on Thursday morning that there could be interest in Swansea manager Russell Martin from Watford who are on their quarterly change the manager hunt once again it seems. The Hornets have become one of those sides who change their manager on a regular basis and are heading towards relegation...

“I’d be crazy…to not accept a contract from them”

Let's be honest.
If he succeeds there he's a hero.
If he fails he will financially be made for life.
Plus they will back him with signings ( Obi, Piroe and Downes ?)
Why wouldn't he go ?

As I’ve said before, I think that Martin will climb the ladder simply due to his extreme style of play - regardless of league position and results. Top teams will look at us and think of what Martin’s style of play could look like if we had a defence worth £200 million.

He will go eventually, I'm sure, but Swansea is a beautiful area, his family seem settled and he has not done anything yet. Sure there are bigger names they will go for first. He knows he will be given time here, not sure about Watford

Good point.

Potter finished mid-table and was poached by a PL club (although he did have his success in Sweden on his CV). Martin is going to finish mid-table and could attract offers from the PL.

Meanwhile Cooper finishes in the Playoffs twice, yet no one was interested even when he was a free agent. It was only when Forest needed rescuing that someone gave him a shot. I imagine he'd attract more interest this summer.

I’m sure a massive pay rise will make Watford just as beautiful to him and his family. ;) :D

Yes and no, the way I’d see it (and this is probably just me) once you start earning the silly money that’s in modern football, it becomes less important the more you earn. Managers especially are more dispensable than players. He’s got kids, not sure if they’re in school, but it would mean uprooting them again, new school, new friends etc. is it worth it when you’re already rich ?

Is he rich ?
Never know in football how long a job will last or when the next offer will come.
If he gets a silly offer then he would be mad to turn it down, as much as I want him to stay and carry on the good work

Out of all the clubs that could go for him Watford surely the least attractive? Barely get a space in the car park before you’re sacked. Massive difference between potter leaving for Brighton compared to Martin being linked to Watford

That's only true if you see money as money. For these guys it's more of a status symbol, badge of honour and means of keeping score. I saw it so much with fund managers that I suggested paying the buggers in smarties, given that it was all about who got most.

Plus Martin won't be on that much (relatively) with us and our concept of 'rich' will be different to his. First decent offer and he's out of here, just like at MK when he implied he was pledging himself to them days before he signed for us and knowing he would. I don't blame him playing both sides in case it went wrong with us appointing him and he could have enhanced his hero status as a consolation prize by 'choosing' them. It would be a shame if he went before we really see if he has anything more to give us, but there we go.

We are a strange club in that our players and managers, or loanees, always seem ridiculously attractive to others after a short time of succeeding with us. I can't think of many other clubs like that. Of course, Martin, like Martinez, has spent a lot of time building a press myth, and I have no doubt that he's looking for 'better' as soon as possible. Whether he, or anyone, would define Watford as that is a different issue.

This is the best news I’ve read for weeks - please go Russ and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Let’s get a manager in who is actually qualified to manage a Championship club, has an attacking ethos and is able to be pragmatic when called for.

You really are a cheerful fellow aren't you ?
Assuming he stays, will you spend all next season hoping he fecks up so they will give the boot ?
Honestly, some "supporters " amaze me

There are 50 messages on the Watford fans new manager forum and NONE of them mention Russell Martin. This was just one journo bashing out something to meet his daily quota before rushing off to the pub.
