The best player in an average side.
I'd say more an average Championship player in an average Championship side. If he wasn't there, would others shine more because they couldn't just give it to him? Looks like we'll never find that out even by 'resting' him.

Well, entertainingly the usual challenged types here haven't disappointed with their meek, shallow, schoolboy level analysis of Matty.

The last time he was rested was (ironically) against Saints in the Cup.
Downs played CDM (and captain, i think).
It was a disaster of a decision by Martin - we were shocking from the off, had no control whatsoever, rabbits in the headlights. We were Downs and out. Matty came on 2nd half, wrested control, got us back into the game, got us level and took us into extra time.
They'll never make that mistake again.

As for Matty dropping so deep - how on earth can some here still not get that as El Capitan and responsible intelligent Leader he is duty-bound to keep far too close a watching brief on Cabungle. Matty's natural instincts draws him back into the deep quarterback pivot. It's his job to cover for our calamitous Cabungle-shaped Achilles heel. Heck he'd far rather play in the progressive 8 slot. An England u21 international of massive promise - the next Glen Hoddle 🙇‍♂️ by many accounts.

Without Matty, Lukey would be gone in a heartbeat. Oh, hang on........ take a rest Matty......

Most consistent player for years. As an attacking midfielder he can be outstanding. If Franco could do the Bodde bit, Cooper (or AN Other) do the Pratley bit, he would excel as someone in the ilk of Alan Davies or Cornforth. Creative on the ball and holding the midfield and attack together.
However, he seems to have decided/been deployed as a defensive outlet, spending more time at CB than the CB's, which is a waste of time and BLOODY INFURIATING

Considering Grimes current positional role..

What needs to change to improve his game and give us better creativity?

I mean if you look at the standard Championship midfielder they need mobility, pace and some physicality which I suspect Grimes doesn't have why partly he hides in the back four.

Similar with Fulton.. looks laboured during the game even some of his rash yellow card tackling has gone and playing box to box is no longer in his locker

Oh....and Franco plays on a 60 min timer

Probably more suitable :ROFLMAO:

These last few games are comfortably the worst I've seen from Grimes
You're right A4.
Williams is not only failing to deliver but he's slowly but surely breaking our very best asset.

Williams is desperately clutching, hoping our elite level leader Matty G can save him in the way Matty saved Martin when Martin was at his lowest ebb (PT rumors / shite no-win run)

And as such even Grimes is now struggling under Williams - Williams heaps far too much pressure on him to ‘do everything’, ‘be omnipresent’ ….be my savior. Williams’ scapegoat, in a selfish self centered snidely way.

Williams is doing a Martin and destroying us in the worst possible way, by stealth.

.
Matty shrugs off the Williams-malaise, lifts the players and delivers a characteristically Leading El Capitan performance, as per. Off and on the pitch.

Lifted from today's matchday thread :
'Matty completely bossing this from deep pivot to create the platform, and more latterly the mid pivot. The entire team is buoyed with the confidence, control and poise he exudes. Different class. 10/10 El Capitan, as per.'

Matty, in a nutshell. Week in, week out.

Metronomically prescient, driving, commanding, coaxing, encouraging, leading in so many ways. Time immemorial.

The challenged fans who still fail to this - stick to tiddlywinks, in your father's garden sheds.

You've lifted it from your own comment.

Played second fiddle to Franco today.
?
Matty gave Franco et al the platform. It really is that simple.

The beauty of it - we have a supremely gifted Leader (off and on the pitch) with no ego - a proper Giver, in lots of ways.

Stick Franco in CDM, swap roles - we'd be lost, we'd be scrambling. It really is that simple.

Matty very nearly gifted them a goal with another suicide pass in front of our own penalty area in the last few minutes.
I'd be glad if he could get rid of that annoying habit which has crept into his game. Sometimes you just have to put your laces through it.
