Do you like the likes of Claire Martin and Halie Loren, Mutey? Or are you more serious improvised hardcore? I admit I only like the light stuff; Pat Metheny is about my limit…is he even Jazz? or Rufus. All the drummers experimented with weird time signatures whan I was learning in the early 70s, which came from Jazz I think. Even Phil Collins was copying Mahavishanu or something spelt similar.Good to see this thread back![]()
I’m a “music” fan first and foremost, I can appreciate most genres. I’m not into rap or dance music, not too keen on Country but will listen to and enjoy most other types including classical.Do you like the likes of Claire Martin and Halie Loren, Mutey? I’ve seen Claire Martin many times at our jazz club and she is excellent. I’m a massive guitar based fan, be that jazz, rock, prog or anything else. I’ve seen Pat Metheney live and I’d definitely say he is jazz. Drummers are a different kettle of fish. How they manage to concentrate on four different rhythms with four different limbs at the same time is beyond me.
This may be controversial but I think any musician that started in jazz can play anything. So many examples of rock and prog players started in jazz, Cream had Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker (Clapton was blues based), Yes’s line up were also jazz based mostly.
Bill Bruford played at Swansea Jazz Club, saw him and bought a couple of his jazz albums.Aye Bruford left because he wanted to be more jazzy (and fist fights with Squire). Alan White was more of a 4/4 man. I love Claire Martin, seen her a few times, and Clare Teal, though she went a bit too mainstream and easy listening for me. An old neighbour in Swansea used to play me weather report and chick corea in the 80s, but I couldn’t hack it.
Jaco Pastorius, that’s who I was trying to remember.Bill Bruford played at Swansea Jazz Club, saw him and bought a couple of his jazz albums.
Bass player with Weather Report was Jaco Pastorius who absolutely amazing, sadly died far too early.
