Talking about all these old grounds brought back memories of the re-election process that we ourselves had to partake in, in the mid 70s . I can remember both Workington and Southport getting voted out , replaced by Wimbledon and Wigan. Indeed I still view those clubs a "newcomers" even though it happened 50 years ago:ROFLMAO:
50 years

And all this thinking about old grounds

Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh

My best mate at University supported Southport. It was an awful decision (to vote them out, not support them...although...). thinking about it, it must have been after 1980 when they were punted, as I didn't meet him until 1977.

I think if there was one season that galvanised me as die hard Swansea supporter it was 77-78. After having been so agonisingly close to finally sealing the deal the season before(when we were the top goalscorers in the entire football league), we held our nerve and went one better. It was a life lesson for an 8 year old. You have to move past the disappointment of missing out. Get back to it. Go again.

Bloody hell, that's shocked and scared me a bit. I don't remember talking to him about it, and would have sworn we were still sort of 'rivals' in spirit if not league position after 1980. Jesus...I prided myself on my memory of 40 years ago, if not last week. I need a lie down now.

Edit He actually came with us to Bootham in our Div 4 promotion season, and Boothferry in our Division 3 one to back my team. I'm amazed I can't remember his team going pop at the same time.

And employ John Toshack.

Yes I’ve been there twice
First time I think we won 3-2
The second time 5-1?
I think that’s the game you’re on about.
Quite a bit of trouble inside behind one goal. I was up behind the other end
I was at one of those games, went up on the pop and crisps bus as a callow youth. Can't remember anything else about it, much less crowd trouble.

From memory I think the first game was trouble free
Second game completely different

We played at Rushden a few times, got a decent point there the year they went up and we nearly went out of the league. Think the ground had more seats then the town had people! Not surprised they went under eventually.

Speaking of that league 2 season, watching us play at that giant arena in Darlington in front of about 2000 fans was a very strange experience as well! At least Hull and Huddersfield managed to bring in decent crowds to their ones.

I think the most classic old ground i've been to would be Boro's old Ayresome Park some time in the mid-60s
I went there a couple of times too in the late 70s, not because I had any affiliation to Boro, it was just that I landed my first job up in the north east after leaving university, and I really fancied watching a big match or two in the old first division as a novelty, after 15 years of following the Swans in the lower leagues!
A young Graeme Souness was playing for them before his move to Liverpool, and he was clearly destined for greater things.

Bristol City v Swansea City
