O'Dea - Reason For Our Downfall?

I’m personally of the opinion that the O’Dea stuff is over the top too. It’s almost like people didn’t want to blame Sheehan so O’Dea must’ve been the problem, when I think both of them weren’t good enough for us unfortunately. Both honest and professional guys though clearly and I bear them no ill will, it’s just the cut throat nature of football.

The players vs tactics debate is an interesting one though. If the way the players are being coached is flawed and the plan isn’t working, can they be criticised just for following instructions? Can the players just be better if what they are being asked to do is ineffective?

There’s no doubting they aren’t playing to their potentials, and they should take responsibility.

O'Dea may or may not be a good coach, you don't get to work for a club like Celtic if you haven't got something about you.

The three goals we conceded yesterday were the fault of the players on that pitch. There was a complete lack of desire to compete. I felt like Bristol City wanted it more.

Things have gone to shit this season, and I don't think people are too wide of the mark in ascribing a fair proportion of the blame for that to O'Dea and the influence he clearly had considering his team selection and game managment was horrendous, but it's quite bizarre to see people still claiming that O'Brien was the major reason for our run of form last season considering he played his first three games under Williams and we lost two of those. He had little to no impact playing in the Williams style, and a quite significant one when Sheehan altered the way we played.

That AS reverted in the Summer, whether willingly or because he was too weak to push back against the advice of his coaching staff doesn't change what happened last season. no matter how much people want to pretend that one player alone is capable of completely reverting a teams form, defensive capability, way of play etc.

The contortions people are going to are frankly astonishing.

‘Sheehan was assistant to Duff and Williams when we were crap’

‘Ah, but that was nothing to do with him as he was just an assistant so had no say’

‘Sheehan is manager and we are crap’

‘Ah, but in this particular case it has everything to do with the assistant who overrules Sheehan - it’s his fault rather than Sheehan’s’.

‘What about the players?’

‘Top six potential, badly coached’

‘But they are making stupid individual errors’

‘Coaches’ fault’.

‘They can’t cross a ball, find space, do anything creative’

‘It’s been coached out of them’.

I’ve been reading that since Martin took over.

Yep.

We have to hope that Matos will be able to establish a way of playing that means the whole is significantly better than the sum of its parts. The system gives the creativity rather than the individual.

It’s possible, we’ve seen it before with Brendan, but to read this board we have a team that’s chock full of talent being held back by a series of people that are, for that moment, the fall guy.

Despite (with the exception of last summer's intake) a sizeable portion - probably around half - of our first team squad now about to be on their 4th coach since being at the club. 5th or even 6th in a small handful of cases.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, etc.

A few weeks ago I laughed off the suggestion of people putting blame on O'Dea as I thought they were only using it to find any excuse for Sheehan.

But after yesterday's performance and especially the substitutions I'm starting to believe he is 100% more to blame then I thought.

The subs felt like a carbon copy of the Ipswich match where they were made with 0 logic and just a case of throwing shit at the wall and hoping it sticks. Also the refusal to use Yalcouye and Widell even when the game was as good as done is something we've seen all too much.

At the end of the day the buck stops with Sheehan. He was the main guy and hand picked him to be his assistant so he is fully to blame. Idk what made him think O'Dea has the appropriate qualifications to be his assistant besides being his mate. All he achieved was being the head of pathway development at Celtic (funnily enough what our now soon to he manager did at Liverpool 😬)
