100%, but the unfortunate truth is we aren’t. Our mental health services are in a poor state and when we’re talking about dangerous offenders with mental health issues it’s even worse. I can think of a number of other high profile cases including Valdo Calocane who murdered several people in Nottingham, Zephania McLeod who killed 1 person and injured several others in Birmingham in 2020. I’m sure there’d be plenty more if I started looking.
We nearly always get an enquiry, lots of recommendations followed up by very little change or improvement and even less accountability at the highest levels.

Underinvestment is decades long-really goes back to Thatcher and the move to 'care in the community'. Not addressed by Blair/Brown. Fourteen years of austerity far from helping-in fact almost destroying all healthcare systems. Access to CAMHS (child mental health) is typically a two year wait.
And despite the ranting of the rabid right (not you Darran) an event that has nothing to do with the-then newly elected Starmer.

The level of mental health support in this country is disgusting. It’s okay to trot out all the strap lines, presentations, MH 1st Aid courses etc, but actual support is horrific. The current funding doesn’t even scratch the surface.

I totally agree. There are plenty of cases, I picked this one due to the similarities. All of the relevant services from mental health, care and the police are overwhelmed.

Obviously those that are a danger to others need to be dealt with so the danger is eliminated, but we don't have anywhere to put them. The level of danger they present to others before they are under very close supervision needs to be much lower and facilities in place to deal with them. AR and JB should not have been able to live freely in any community given their history and conditions.

It goes the other way too - society is a danger to a lot of those who need more care. My wife has dealt with loads of "cuckooing" cases, exploitation, modern day slavery and financial abuse. All in Swansea. Many live in total squalor.

She's often said there needs to be some sort of controlled care community established to provide far more support, nothing like an institution (which were awful) but way more support than "care in the community" which doesn't work. In fact it doesn't really exist, but is cheap.
