Because Hamas are recognised as a terrorist organisation and should they be voted in to govern Palestine no British government would allow the embassy to be operative.

Thank you for clarity

Starmer has said all along that recognising Palestine is conditional on no Hamas.

edit, better say, 'I think' as my memory is increasingly unreliable.

I think you're right on Starmer. However, I can't see Hamas standing aside especially rightly or wrongly they command a huge vote of support in Palestine still. Palestine have legal rights now so can exercise what they feel benefits their region.

What has been achieved by recognising Palestine then?
I’ve been a bit busy the last few days and not seen much news, serious question.

Apart from that?
It’s a show of unity between Europe, us (the UK that is, not the US!), Canada, Australia demonstrating that we will not stand by and allow the world to be carved up by the US on one side and BRICs on the other.

The UK parliament voted to recognise Palestine in 2014. It was simply a matter of when.

It all has to be seen through a much wider geopolitical lens than simply recognition of one state. Three quarters of the world now recognise Palestine.

As for the Hamas Embassy stuff, firstly Starmer, Macron and all the others have said that the6 will not accept a Hamas leadership of Gaza (remember that the other part of Palestine, the West Bank, is not under Hamas rule), secondly, there are all sorts of rogue governments that have or have had embassies here. Including North Korea and Russia.

And the USA.

How does Starmer,Macron and all the others know that there won’t be any Hamas supporters in the Embassy then?
In the same way they know exactly what’s going on in the Chinese Embassy like.

With over 600k Israelies living in the West Bank does this mean with Palestine having a two state solution, does this suggest Israelies have to leave or the hope they live side by side in peace in the West Bank.

How many of the 600k Israelis living in the West Bank have been indiscriminately slaughtered.?
