TALKING TACTICS | SWANSEA CITY V MIDDLESBROUGH

Source: Swansea Official Site

Football stats experts WhoScored.com take a close look at the form of Ryan Manning, and asses the impact he could make in Swansea City's weekend clash with Middlesbrough.

The battle to finish in the automatic promotion spots is heating up nicely. Brentford occupy second as things stand, but a 1-0 loss to Norwich, combined with Watford's win over Wycombe and Swansea's victory at Stoke, means just a point separates the trio as we come into the final weeks of the season.

On paper at least, Swansea have the upper hand. While they sit fourth, they have two games in hand over Brentford and Watford, but they need to keep up the pace with the pair if they are to ultimately leapfrog the duo into second.

Up next for the Swans is the welcome of Middlesbrough and, after defeat in their last home league match against Bristol City, it's important Steve Cooper's side get back to winning ways at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea come into the clash unbeaten in their last five home meetings with Middlesbrough, winning four, though Neil Warnock's side have been in good form on the road of late, winning back-to-back away matches.

The Swans will be aware of the challenge facing them, as they target another valuable three points.

One man who could feature prominently for the hosts is Ryan Manning.

He made just just fourth league start of the season at Stoke in midweek, but provided a key assist in the 2-1 win at the bet365 Stadium, teeing up Connor Roberts midway through the first half for the Welshman to bag his fourth league goal of the campaign.

Manning's creative qualities are evident in his WhoScored.com strengths of 'crossing' and 'key passes', with the 24-year-old maximising the latter quality from the off of late having provided at least one assist in each of his last three competitive starts for Cooper's side.

Despite only registering 446 minutes of league action in 2020-21, only three players have registered more assists than Manning of all Swansea players this season, which speaks volumes of his attacking ability and the south Wales side will need Manning to be at his very best in the final third against Boro.

Should Cooper keep faith with Manning at left wing-back, which would mean a place on the bench for Jake Bidwell once more, then Djed Spence is likely to be the man tasked with limiting the Swansea star's influence when he does get forward.

Spence earned a WhoScored.com rating of 7.66 in Boro's recent 2-1 win at Coventry, that his second best rating in a Championship match this season, so he will come into clash in south Wales with his confidence high.

However, Manning has proven to be a difficult player to contain and, if he is handed the chance to prove his worth once more, you can be sure he'll grab the opportunity with both hands as Swansea look to strengthen their promotion credentials on Saturday.

KOREY SMITH FEELING FITTER, SHARPER AND STRONGER

Source: Swansea Official Site

Korey Smith is feeling “stronger than ever” after the Swansea City midfielder made his first start since returning from injury.

The 30-year-old missed five games due to a quad injury sustained in mid-January, and recently marked his return by coming off the bench in the recent wins over Nottingham Forest and Coventry City.

In midweek, Smith featured for the full 90 minutes as the Swans completed a comeback win at Stoke City thanks to Connor Roberts’ fourth goal of the season and Andre Ayew’s last-gasp penalty.

That was Smith’s 26th appearance of the campaign – already topping his tally of 22 for Bristol City last season – and he’s feeling in good shape as the Swans enter their final 14 league matches, starting with Saturday’s home game with Middlesbrough.

“It’s frustrating when you pick up an injury, particularly when the team’s doing well and pushing near the top of the table,” said Smith.

“But everyone is playing their part, and whoever comes in has to do a job.

“If you do pick up a knock, then you work hard on your recovery and make sure you’re ready as soon as possible.

“Before I came here, I had a few years of bad injuries. Last year I managed 22 games, but I’ve already played 26 times this season.

“On a personal level I feel I’ve brought something to the squad. My team-mates, coaches and fans can see what I bring too, and I really appreciate that.

“I feel great. I feel stronger than ever, and fit and sharp. That’s a credit to the sports science team and the physios here.

“It’s a great feeling to be back on the pitch and helping the boys out. Hopefully I can contribute a lot more in the remaining games.”

Today's virtual mascots are Louie Hayton and Rees Alldrick.

Louie is aged seven, comes from Aberdare, and his favourite players are Andre Ayew and Matt Grimes. Louie plays football for AFC Llwydcoed.

Rees is aged four, comes from Swansea, and his favourite player is Jake Bidwell.

When crowds are allowed back I think it would be a great gesture to invite all the virtual mascots to a game. Not as mascots but maybe to step on the pitch and wave.

back 5 with a diamond middle? I like that

It's good to see him trying something other than Lowe and Ayew together again, which is clearly not working right now. I presume Hourihane is playing as a 10, that will be interesting to watch.

Looking at that Boro line-up, hope our forward players are prepared to come up against a firm and hard defence...

On paper it looks like how we finished the game the other day

Its exactly how we finished on weds, let's hope we can play as well as we finished eh🤞

Very happy with the starting XI. Maintains midfield solidity with an additional creative edge up top without reducing goalscoring ability. It’s also a much needed rest for Jamal with a credible goalscoring threat to come off the bench. Come on Swans!

I can't see the game on Swans TV, is this not available then?
