The Planet Swans Match Report

The Swansea City striker collected a Mark Gower pass turned, created space, and despatched a low shot past Mark Shwarzer into the bottom of the net to cancel out one of the unluckiest goals the Swans will concede this season.

And it was the least that the Swans deserved after a scintilating display that will earn many plaudits - not least from all of those working on ITV who were gushing praise on the Swans after a display at a level that we watch week in week out.

I get almost fed up of saying it but these times are so special and we must enjoy them.   The football we play is outstanding, the technical ability of the players is top class and we have a knack of making teams look ordinary.  And don't forget today's opponents are a Top 10 Premier League side.

And had it not been for a rare Dorus flap at a corner that allowed the ball to rebound off Garry Monk for the opening goal the Swans would be the first name into the last 8 draw rather than an either or as we will be come 6.30pm tomorrow.

But who is to say that we cannot go to Fulham and win the game - after all we know after today that we certainly don't have to be in awe of the Premier League team and can more than match our own.

An almost familiar line up for the Swans saw a team of

Dorus

Rangel     Monk     Williams     Tate

Dyer     Britton     Gomez     Allen     Gower

Scotland

You start to wonder if Mark Gower is destined ever to score for the Swans and before the game was half hour old he had spurned two very good chances - denied first by the inside of the post and second by Shwarzer.

The first chance was - as you would expect - superbly created as Gower passed inside to Scotland who held the ball up and played a perfect pass into the path of Gower who beat the Fulham keeper but had to watch on in agony as the ball came back off the inside of the post and he was unable to connect with the rebound.

If that was a good chance, the second was even better.  A thirteen pass movement from side to side left Rangel to look up and play in a perfect cross to the back post for Gower who met the ball but not with 100% perfection and it was pushed away for a corner to the frustration of the winger.

Fulham 1.jpg

Swansea were in total control with Britton, Allen and Gomez controlling the middle of the park and Fulham really creating nothing of note.   Indeed they went in at half time one goal up but only thanks to an amazing stroke of luck.   Dorus flapped at a corner and the ball deflected off Garry Monk - totally unaware - to give the visitors a very undeserved lead.

Roberto's half time comment was one of praise for his team and the second half started in a similair vein with Gower denied by another good save before Scotland struck with a piece of individual brilliance.

That spurred Swansea into some more fantastic football.  Passes were made from left to right from forward to back and everybody was in top form as Fulham at times seemed to be purely chasing shadows.  Another goal would have been what the Swans would deserved and it was a mixture of bad luck and desperate defending that stopped it happening.

The FA Cup dream for this season very much though continues to live on and after today's display then many more will be joining the queue of people who praise one of the best footballing sides I have ever seen.   And when an ITV pundit compares it to some of the football that Spain play you just know everything is good.

A very proud day to be a Swansea fan and certainly don't write us off as yet.

Fulham 3.jpg

Swansea manager Roberto Martinez:

We created the better chances, we were very disappointed with the goal that we conceded, so overall I'm proud of the players.

Today was a big test playing against a Premier League side. The goal came at the wrong time but the reaction we had, we controlled things, we created good chances.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson:

We certainly weren't at our best. I thought it was a jaded performance from our side.

All credit to Swansea, I thought their performance was excellent. Their high energy passing and movement was very good and we really had to dig in very deeply and rely heavily on our defensive organisation to keep our heads afloat.

BBC Match Report

Fulham A 1.jpg

Fulham struck twice in four minutes to knock Championship side Swansea City out of the FA Cup and set up a plum quarter-final with Manchester United.

Jason Scotland's 19th goal of the season gave Swansea the lead when he poked the ball past Mark Schwarzer.

But Clint Dempsey inspired Fulham's comeback as the American headed home Simon Davies' 77th minute corner.

Bobby Zamora completed the fight-back as he headed in his fourth goal of the season from Davies' superb cross.

Swans boss Roberto Martinez hoped to celebrate his two years in charge at the Liberty Stadium by causing another Cup upset after knocking out holders Portsmouth in the previous round.

But Fulham, who have lost just once at Craven Cottage this season, showed why their home is such a fortress by showing resilience to win their fifth-round replay.

Welsh international Davies, whose local team was Swansea, played a key role in this win against the side from his home-land.

And his 10th-minute corner almost caught the Swans cold, with Erik Nevland meeting it at the far post and causing a brief moment of panic in the box.

In-form Swans striker Scotland, though, gave Fulham a warning sign of what was to come when his 12th-minute shot brought a good save from Cottagers' goalkeeper Schwarzer.

And Brede Hangeland had to react quickly to stop Guillem Bauza poking home the rebound.

Schwarzer then saved well from Jordi Gomez's stinging shot before, at the other end, Swansea's Leon Britton was inches away from conceding a penalty as his handball was deemed to be a fraction outside the area.

Dorus De Vries showed his quality to save an Nevland volley but the Swans keeper appeared beaten when Hangeland's towering header from Davies' corner crashed against the woodwork just before half-time.

But Scotland managed to succeed where Hangeland did not 90 seconds into the second-half when he was given too much room by Aaron Hughes and John Pantsil, who between them allowed Mark Gower to roll the ball to Scotland 15 yards out.

The Trinidad and Tobago international finished to score his 14th goal in 15 games - and his third against top-flight sides - as he showed why Premier League clubs are monitoring his progress.

Fulham captain Danny Murphy, like star striker Andy Johnson rested after their second game in three days, replaced Oliver Dacourt, who limped off after an hour.

Zamora, who scored in Sunday's 2-0 win Premier League over West Brom, missed two good chances to level and both were blocked after ricochets in the penalty box.

Then Davies was denied from three yards before stinging De Vries' palms with a fiery shot.

And the USA midfielder nearly doubled his tally moments later after Zamora put him one-on-one with De Vries, the Dutchman made a fine sprawling save.

But he had no chance a minute later when another Davies cross found Zamora and he nodded back across goal to make it 2-1 to give the Championship play-off chasers just their second defeat in 19 games.

Fulham A 2.jpg

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson:

I thought we showed incredible energy just one day after playing a tough Premier League tie against West Brom and I can't praise the team enough for the way they prepared for this game and the way they've gone about their business from the very first minute.

They also showed great character to come back from 1-0 down, albeit it was against the run of play. There were a lot of goal chances and they were mainly at one end of the field. It was a very fast, very intensive game and I have to praise Swansea who did very well to live with us.

You are always nervous when you go one goal down because you need to score two goals and you know how difficult two goals are to come by at any level of competition.

But two goals, I think, was scant reward. Had we not won the game we'd have been sitting here feeling very sorry for ourselves after giving such a good performance.

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez:

Sometimes in the FA Cup you need that little bit of luck and not just tonight, but in the original tie we didn't have that.

I'm proud of my team, we were ourselves and controlled the game for large spells and scored. But then we found it a bit difficult to get that pass, to get that composure where we could have dictated the final part of the game - but that is being very critical.

It has been a fantastic cup run and now we must focus on the league but I'm sure the fans will be proud of the players.

We are very disappointed to get knocked out of the cup after competing really well but have many positives after a great cup run.

THE SWANS MAKE THEIR PREMIER LEAGUE BOW

Manchester City 4 Swansea City 0
15 August 2011
The Ethiad Stadium, Manchester

MATCH REPORT - BBC SPORT

Sergio Aguero scored twice on his debut for Manchester City as they hammered Premier League new-boys Swansea.

David Silva and Gareth Barry struck the woodwork before Edin Dzeko prodded home after Swans keeper Michel Vorm parried an Adam Johnson shot into his path.

Aguero slotted home unmarked at the far post shortly after his introduction.

View attachment 2011 Away 2.jpg

The second-half substitute then audaciously flicked the ball for Silva to volley home before scoring with a long-range strike late in the match.
It was a spectacular start for the Argentine, who arrived in Manchester for a club-record fee of £38m in July as Robert Mancini's side began their campaign in emphatic fashion.

Swansea were not without their impressive moments and kept their big-spending opponents at bay amid a first-half onslaught, with their own debutant Vorm in fine form.

But Manchester City's second-half blitz, with Silva and Dzeko also shining, showed their intentions for the new season.
Aguero, the son-in-law of legendary footballer Maradona, had been struggling with blisters and only began the game on the bench.
But Gael Clichy, another of City's summer signings, did start, one of three changes from the side beaten by Manchester United in the Community Shield.

Swansea, who gave debuts to Steven Caulker and Danny Graham in addition to Vorm, showed plenty of the flowing football that has won them many admirers in recent seasons in the first period without really testing Joe Hart.

Vorm, however, was soon called into action from a short corner as Silva played a one-two with Nigel de Jong and unleashed a powerful curling left-foot shot that was brilliantly palmed away.

Silva went even closer soon after, a fine flowing move ending with Johnson picking him out in the penalty area, but his shot from 10 yards came back off the crossbar.

Swansea - the first Welsh side to play in the Premier League - rode their luck during the final five minutes of the first half, with Vorm denying Dzeko and Yaya Toure before Barry also rattled the crossbar.

Having weathered the home team's onslaught, Swansea's Stephen Dobbie forced Hart to save and breaking free down the middle.
But the goal that Mancini's men had long threatened finally came on 57 minutes when Dzeko pounced from close range after Vorm had only parried Johnson's effort.

It started a spell of three goals in 14 minutes, the second coming when Aguero, who replaced De Jong and almost immediately scored with a shot from the edge of the box, tapped in a low cross from Micah Richards.

Aguero's next contribution was even better, drifting past Vorm and acrobatically hooking the ball back for Silva to fire home.
Swansea rarely threatened during the second half and conceded a fourth when Aguero crowned a memorable debut with a sublime strike from 25 yards.

2011 Away 3.jpg

Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers

It was a little bit harsh on us really, for large parts of the game some of our passing and movement was fantastic. I'm very proud of the players.

It's obviously a baptism of fire coming to this club, who are going to be challenging in Europe, never mind in the Premier League.

I'm disappointed with the goals we conceded - I think we can defend them better

The fourth goal was world class from a world-class player - you've seen just from his little cameo his qualities.

But I'm really, really proud that we came here and passed the ball well and gave them something to think about.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini

It was the perfect start, it was important to start the season very well and it was important to score the goals and score with the strikers.

I know Aguero very well but I don't think he is 100%. He played in the Copa America and he needs to do more in training, but I am happy because he scored two important goals.

Tranmere 2 Swansea 1
14 February 2004

The Planet Swans Match Report

It was a 4-5-1 line up for the Swans today as they looked to progress to the quarter finals of the competition for the first time since 1964. Leon Britton, Alan Tate and the masked Lee Trundle returned to the starting line up with Kris O'Leary, James Thomas and Kevin Nugent all making so with a place on the bench but all to feature as it turned out at some point in the proceedings.

Freestone

Byrne Tate Iriekpen Howard

Martinez

Maylett Martinez Britton Coates

Trundle

The Swans started by far the better team and should have gone ahead within ten minutes when Leon Britton played in Brad Maylett on the right with a clear run on goal. Maylett though appeared to be in two minds and neither shot at goal nor crossed the ball as it rolled harmlessley out for a goal kick.

View attachment Tranmere 2.jpg

The Swans goal though wasn't far from coming and when it did it arrived with some style. Jonathan Coates was found on the left and as he tried to cut inside, he layed the ball out to Leon Britton. Britton looked up and his cross was met by the foot of Andy Robinson who wrong footed the Tranmere keeper to send the travelling support into ecstasy.

At this stage of the game the Swans looked well in control and Tranmere fans were starting to look a bit despondent as the visitors took the play to them.

However, the home side were given the chance to get back into the game from a piece of hesitation in the Swabsea area. Captain Roberto Martinez should have cleared the ball but failed too and from a resulting cross, Izzy (?) was penalised with a push and the referee had little hesitation but to point to the penalty spot. Roger was sent the wrong way from the resulting free kick and Tranmere were back on level terms although not deservedly at that point.

From that point forward until half time though they did dominate proceedings and were usually first to the loose ball. They threatened down both sides of the pitch with some crisp and intelligent passing although to be fair they did little to trouble Roger in front of goal.
Half-time came and went with the scores at 1-1 and Swans fans deciding that they would settle for the result, fancying their chances against their opponents at the Vetch.

Tranmere started the second half in much the same way as they finished the first with Swansea very much on the back foot. Howard (?) headed one off the line when the Tranmere fans behind the goal were celebrating taking the lead as the pressure mounted on Swansea's goal. What turned out to be the winner was coming and a sweetly struck shot from 20 yards gave Roger no chance and the second division side were in the lead - and at that stage deservedly so. Swansea were reeling and as heads dropped the noise from the travelling support picked up a decibel to try and get their team back into it.

Being behind seems to spark something into the Swans and today was no different as they started to attack with some fluency and neat passing in the middle between Britton, Robinson and Martinez saw them starting o carve out chances. Robinson was inches wide with a free kick from the same position that he scored against Preston and Trundle fizzed a shot across goal. Nugent replaced Coates reverting to Flynn's favoured formation and we did start to look a better side.

Flynn changed formation again when Thomas came on for Howard and it was all or nothing as the Swans thre men into attack. Nugent was winning balls in the air but to little avail as Thomas and Trundle seemed to be taking up the same position and succeeding only in being in each others way. Maylett on the wing was displaying the form that we have seen recently - poor - taking away the threat that maybe we could have posed from that position.

The Cup run was as good as over when Tate seemed to hamper a Tranmere attack (media reports suggest use of an arm - worth watching Match of the Day for) and the referee showed no hesitation in showing him a straight red card for the offence. Again, this could be one to watch on Match of the Day but the referee was certainly in little doubt. O'Leary was sent on in place of Byrne but it was to little avail - as was the four minutes of stoppage time that were played at the end of the game.

View attachment Tranmere 1.jpg

The FA Cup run was over and it was a brave finish to the campaign that started back in November with a 3-0 win over Rushden. Not quite what we imagined but we can have no massive complaints about the way that the team played today. It is now down to the serious business of the league from next week with no distractions that the FA Cup can throw out. Tranmere were the better team and deserved their place in the quarter finals but you can't help but wonder what would have happened had Martinez wrapped one of his red boots around the ball when he had the chance when we were ahead. Defensive problems costing us again.

An enjoyable day out in the Wirral and great noise from the travelling Jack Army but it simply was not to be. Good luck to Tranmere in the quarter finals but I'm sure there are many Swans fans who will look on in envy when the draw is made.

Quite simply, not good enough.

If they played yesterday's line up, we'd be humped out of sight. Thankfully they won't, or I hope they won't. Chelters dealt pretty well with their B team press.
