Weaker than Cardiff’s? There is potential there if manager could be a bit more creative with what we’ve got instead of playing to a predictable pattern which you’ve already alluded to. Moving it through the middle Eon perhaps Cullen or how about Abdulai? Play through for Vip to get in to. I have a dream

Cardiff have a weak team as well but they do have a couple of players that have some individual ability. I have no clue what most of them are called but that forward that scored two is better than anything we have. By a long shot. Chambers is better than anything we have as well, (and yes, I know he was crucified by Montero before anyone starts). Ralls was better today than any of our midfield. Robertson was better at looking up and creating something. Etc.

Everybody's right in this thread. We've been ran poorly off-field for ages that's resulted in a continually weakening squad and lack of hope and direction for the club, plus we have a manager in place who can't change his ways to try and get the most out of what he's given, and clearly has the motivational talents of a slug.

The claim of us having a 'very poor squad' is an interesting one though. Poor compared to what we've seen grace our shirt for most of the last 15 years? yes; but I don't think it's especially poor compared to what I've seen from peer Championship clubs, hence our league position. I wouldn't swap our squad for Cardiff's for example.

Condemned to mediocrity until we can somehow magic up a transfer magician, quality owners or a new Brendan.

But none of the players you mention can ever beat anyone in the middle. And none move and find space.

One player we definitely miss is Ollie Cooper in the middle. Who can drive at players.

I wouldn't swap our squad for Cardiff's for example.

And this is the crux of it. Nobody here is claiming that we've got a brilliant squad. We do have a squad that is better than shipping three goals at Cardiff or four at Portsmouth. We have a squad that could at least look like it knows what it's doing on the pitch.

Most teams in the division outside the top four or five have maybe a strong First XI and then the quality drops the deeper on the bench you go. We're far from alone in that.

I remember at the time when posters were raving about it and stating the squad would be sprinkled with premier league gold dust after signing Ashby and Patino.

It was an absolute joke of a window.

Watson did come with a glowing reputation for what he achieved at Luton.

What unfolded when he was here was criminal.

In hindsight it does some weird him leaving Luton just after they had been promoted to the premier league.

Williams has stated that player recruitment was his and O'Leary.. and he's going to the Netherlands tomorrow.. would you trust them two to spend millions on players that you have stated we need?

The reality is no matter what squad he has at his disposal he won't achieve anything.

The football served up on a consistent basis over the last 12 months is nowhere near the standard required.

You can blindly defend the bloke as much as you want. The reality is he is not good enough and never will be.

I must disagree. Have you forgotten Ronald when he first arrived? He terrified the life out of defences. Cullen playing for Wales? A completely different player. But quality can be coached out of a player, just as easily as in.

This squad is capable of attacking football, but for that the defensive midfield can't pass the ball between themselves until the opposition are fully organized with everyone is marked and the zones controlled.

How good could they be? Dunno, but better than what we are seeing.
