Last Friday, 23rd January, at the roundabout junction of Townhill Road, Graiglwyd Road and Powys Avenue, Townhill, the Swans Trust was delighted to officially unveil the latest piece of street art to permanently commemorate legends of Swansea Town and Wales. The unveiling of this latest tribute to Swansea Town and Wales ‘Hall of Fame’ players was one of Townhill’s own, Trevor Ford.

This permanent tribute to Trevor followed on from the recent unveilings of ‘The Sandfields Boys’, – Terry Medwin and Cliff Jones – and two other Swans legends, Mel Nurse and Harry Griffiths respectively, back in November.

More details of these unveilings can be seen on our website HERE

The scheme is part of a larger project by The Swans Trust to promote the history and heritage of the football club, by giving permanent reminders of Swans legends of the past and promote the communities they were proud to hail from and represent.

Friday’s reveal, attended by Trust members, Esme Allchurch, Paul Meller, Gwyn Rees, Dave Jones and Trust Ambassador, David Brayley, was made all the more poignant, as it was unveiled by four members of the Year 6 group of Townhill Community School – the school Trevor Ford attended himself between the ages of 11 to 15 – watched by over 50 of their school mates, who had spent the week learning about Trevor.

It was a joy to witness their gasps of surprise when it was explained to them that when Trevor was transferred to Sunderland from Aston Villa, he became the world’s most expensive footballer…a title currently held by Neymar for a cool £200 million! However, it was not lost on the young pupils the importance of Trevor’s career on a world stage – after all he ended his career as Wales highest goalscorer with 23, and for players who have scored more than 15 goals for Wales, Trevor’s goals per game ratio of 0.61 is vastly superior to anyone else in that list which includes the likes of John Charles, Gareth Bale, Ian Rush, John Hartson and Dean Saunders, to name a few.

The pupils were also interested to hear the stories of why Trevor earned the nickname of ‘Troublesome Trevor’, due to his robust play, propensity to fall out with the managers of his clubs, and of course, his autobiography, ‘I Lead the Attack’, the controversy of which effectively ended his career.

Following the unveil, the Year 6 pupils were invited to a stadium tour back at the Swansea.com followed by a ‘Press Conference’ run by David Brayley, where he gave some instruction on the skills of research and interviewing techniques, before throwing the floor open to the pupils for them to become journalists for the afternoon by quizzing David on a variety of questions about Trevor’s career, the history of the Swans and David’s own career as an author.

Following the event, Headteacher of Townhill Community School, Peter Owen, sent his thanks to the Trust for the opportunity afforded to his pupils, and commented on how much they had ‘absolutely loved it’. Class teacher, Kirsty Broderick added that, ‘it was a real pleasure for the pupils to learn about a local hero, someone they can be proud of and who can inspire them in their own futures.’

One of the key aims of the Trust’s programme to site these tributes in the heart of the communities is to inspire the young people of today, so to hear that is exactly what happened with Trevor Ford’s tribute and his story is very rewarding.

The Trust would like to thank Mr Owen, his staff and the Year 6 pupils of Townhill Community School for their enthusiasm in embracing this unveil and making it such a special day for all.

Our heritage sub-group are now embarking on locating another set of equipment boxes and funding to help commemorate the achievements of our former players and Welsh internationals, and further details will be announced in due course.

The Trust would like to thank Supporter Director Paul Meller for organising the event and our Ambassador David Brayley for preparing this release and for all his help on the day in making this latest unveiling another day to remember.
