If newspaper reports are to be believed then Russell Martin is planning to try and take many of his Swansea City squad to Southampton with him. Whether it is lazy journalism or an indication of Russell Martin’s scouting ability it is hard to tell but there is one thing that I am totally convinced...

If a club offers 'fair value' for a player's contract, and the player wants to go, you can't stop him. That's basic employment law, and a player''s contract is a contract of employment. You can argue about 'fair value', but the Courts when it comes to that Bosman moment will decide it's a lot less than people currently think it is, and everybody knows it.

Don't think that's quite true, the club can turn down any offer while he's under contract, even if the player wants to go,he's their player while under contract, and can move for free when contract ends, but while under contract they can hold out for as much as they like or if ots getting into last year of his contract his value will drop as he can go for free the following year so clubs will usually sell as they would rather get something than nothing when contract ends

No, the club cannot turn down an offer of fair value. That would go close to indenture, and the Courts will not for one moment tolerate such an idea - it's an absolute non-starter. That is why Jenkins used to turn off his phone ate the end of the window. That way he could avoid receiving the offer for long enough to make it irrelevant.

I wouldn't shut it totally but there is a price for all our players but it's a little more if Soton come calling.
I know players will sulk but if they have more than 12 months then tough, it's time clubs stood up to these players.

I'm a fan of both Wood and Cabango, but with how Russ wants to play, and the resources he has at Soton, surely there's more natural ball playing centre halves around? Hoping it's lazy journalism from Soton based media.

Well went ham have turned down z fes fair offers fof declan rice

It seems odd that if, as repeatedly claimed by his supporters Russy's process requires a better standard of player to work than he had here, why he's apparently so keen to take loads of them there with him.

Fisher and Darling were supposed to be key to the way he wanted to play and look how that turned out.

It would be fun watching them have the majority of the ball, make mistakes and give away soft goals. If he buys them and Grimes, to play zero pace classic Martinball, Soton fans will be in open revolt by Christmas. Just please add Beudiere and Nola to give us a real laugh.

They need to stay here and do the job they can do, Ben could grow into a fine defender if allowed to play to his strengths and Wood looked much more promising in a back 4 rather than a deer in the headlights.

No mention of Darling and Fisher?

No we shouldn't close the doors on Southampton at all, just charge premium prices. Get our compo for Russ by a different route plus plus. As Dr W said, £10m for the Grimester for a start. Or close the doors on everyone and keep some of our best players that have long contracts.

And if it ends up in Court they will lose. No club wants to be the losing club that establishes the precedent, that will be super expensive. So when push comes to shove - and it hasn't yet - they will give in. That is why there is so much posturing, "We will never", "It's not going to happen", "He's not for sale", but in the end they always give in.
I suspect the precedent will be set in Europe, and then we will all be in a different place for contracts and transfers. The current system of loan players is especially vulnerable. When it comes to Court they will almost certainly decide that if the player wants to stay at his loan club, then he can. The FA might set up an arbitration of compensation, but that would be between the FA and the clubs, it would have to be structured so it didn't stop the player. That would be a good thing IMHO.

Fisher I can understand the contempt but I feel that for Darling its a little bit harsh.
For me Darling has been a good player and why he was frozen out when he offered far more than Lati at wingback at the tail end of the season will be one of the many Martin mysteries until my dying day.

On topic though I would have absolutely no qualms about one price for others and a different one at least 50% higher for Southampton. Even if they do willingly pay up the extra compo at this point it has delayed out summer plans by almost a month and there has to be a consequence to that.

Clubs like Everton come in for Piroe? £12m please
Southampton? £18m or fuck off

See the bitterness in this thread again from the same old trouts 🤣🤣

They say Russ fanboys are a ‘cult’ the bitter boys do more talking about him than any other group of fans. Literally falling over each other to post shite about him. Absolutely fantastic scenes. Keep him close to your hearts bois bach.

I'd read some bollocks on here over the years but that takes the biscuit. Unless there is something written into a player's contract (minimum release clause or similar), the club that holds the player's registration can decide whatever figure they like is required to buy him. This is the case until they enter the last 6 months of their contract.

The posturing is either trying to keep the player from asking to leave or bargaining for the highest price possible. If a club genuinely thought they could go to court to force a club to sell them a player for a lower price, the likes of Real Madrid would have done this years ago.

I'd love to extrapolate this out to other walks of life. I could knock on someone's door and offer them market value for their house, then take them to court to force them to sell it to me! Doesn't matter if it wasn't on sale, I offered 'fair value' and they're obliged to accept.

Turning down good offers just because they come from Southampton would be textbook "cutting off your nose to spite your face" behaviour. Hopefully the grown ups are in charge rather than the children when/if the fax machine starts whirring.

100% agreed but I think he was injured
