The ‘Vítor Matos’ Managerial Thread

The lineup I could forgive him going "safe" even if I didn't like it
But I agree the substitutions were utterly bizarre

Taking off a full back and moving a center half to full back so that you can introduce... a center half. While 2-0 down
Then taking off the other full back to introduce a defensive midfielder

Utterly bizarre substitutions that left us with absolutely no cohesive shape or formation plan from what I could see
It's not first time. And I know I'm looking for a fall guy
But O Dea for me has played a massive part in our downfall. The subs this season has been shocking. Not so much the personal but the timing and tactics. Why did we make 2 subs today and then make another sub 5 minutes later? Strange. Why did Santos come on. Same as Fulton. And why push Burgess up? That screams of someone who is clueless.

I agree on the subs being clueless.

The triple change I can understand, two up top, Stamenic hadn't played for over a month and Eom had been ineffective.

The two changes after that though? Utterly shocking, even playing Football Manager the game would ask you wtf are you doing

He didn’t do that.

He went three at the back with Burgess on the left of the three.

When Santos came on you could even see him holding up three fingers to Burgess and Casey.

He took off the other full back to leave Inoussa and Ronald as wing backs.

We were utterly dreadful but it’s obvious what he was doing.

To be honest it was Fifa subs. 😂😂😂. Throw anything at the wall. Santos was really odd for me. Why did he bring him on for Smith. A player who in his own right is a presence, but was not suited to this game. Then move Burgess up front more who more mobile but not an attacking footballer. For me Yalcouye would of done well in this game and Widell.

It didn't appear to be obvious to our players because they were all over the place at the end, there were massive defensive gaps.
That's 3 games in a row where we've made a number of late substitutions, changed the shape of the team & looked shambolic.
The commentators on the Preston game even highlighted Benson gesturing to the bench after he came on.

I will be an outlier here - but I honestly believe that we were closely matched with Brizzle - who are a top 6 team on their own patch.
The big difference is that we are totally deficient in both penalty areas. Giving terrible goals away (all 3) and hardly creating jack shit from promising positions.
Selection wise - needing a win - who would start with their top scorer (by a mile) on the bench? Select Cullen (Bellamy hype) Ronald and Eom?
He could have gone a bunch of different ways - BUT
In the 10 role or second striker behind Vipotnik, Idah or Widel offer so much more. Innoussa needs game time - and should be instructed to take players on as soon as he is 1 on 1 - enjoy the game and express himself. His pace and dribbling ability are currently being coached out of him.
Reports that Ronald is being tracked by Premier League clubs is a head scratcher - as his lack of creativity and end product is literally going to give me a stroke from shouting at the telly.
Josh Key - where to start - Maybe the answer is Ronald to RB, as Key cannot defend at all - so why not try Ronald?
If I was Matos (who I believe was watching) I would be thinking that there is a competitive team here that can quickly be moulded into improved performances.
He needs to revert to a back 4 and take the shackles off our midfielders to go and express themselves in forward positions.
As someone else said - our season starts here,

If you had hardly seen us before and then watched that today would you really come away and think we have the ability to be competitive? I wouldn’t.

If Ronald really is being courted by a Premier League club then whoever is doing that should be summarily dismissed from their employment.

I'm hoping a manager that can converse in his native language will do the trick, and our other Portuguese speaking players

I get what you mean but the game is won and lost in both penalty areas and we're poor in both which is a very bad combo.

The owners will be anticipating a top six finish. Still plenty of time and a January window to get through. Welcome aboard butt.

They need a top six squad before they can think of a top six finish

We are well short of that right now with our current squad

Swansea City v Derby County
