Tinnitus

I went stone deaf in 1994 overnight. What I could hear was shushing noises very loud but no-one else could.
A cocktail of dugs including steroids and immunosuppressants was prescribed and four months later I got some hearing back. 80% loss on one side and 50% on the other was the eventual outcome. I function reasonably well with two hearing aids but the tinnitus is constant.

What caused the overnight deafness?

For the most part I don’t notice it through the day unless someone talks about it or I read about it. Since reading this thread when I got up, it’s played hell with me today 🙄🤣

Immune system attacking the inner ear. If I didn't take immunosuppressants my Immune system would kill me by fighting battles that it doesn't need to. It's like a dunk in Glasgow on a Saturday night.

I just had the old micro suction at Boots. £60, booked online. Made a big difference to my hearing and I think my tinnitus is better. Don't need a referral.
No, the referral is to get it done for free on the NHS. Couple of year ago before they offered this service, I had no choice other than to go private. Still it’s not to bad, once you get the referral, was a week for the appointment.

Doing my head in, like car alarms going off in your head,,

The weird thing is though, just drink one can of lager, and for me it disappears, it was terrible on Friday night, could hardly hear the TV, downed 1 cans of lager, and then total silence, WTF?

I mean that's not the route I want to go down, just getting peed up to block the noise, but its kind of weird, how the high pitches in my ears stop, after even half a can of beer.
I’m exactly the same mate. Years of factory work, playing in bands and recurring ear infections.
I’ve noticed mine gets worse during periods of stress.
The ringing has always been in the key of G, for any musos out there.

I'm genuinely surprised by how common this appears to be. I thought I was suffering alone. I have "morse-code" tinittus in my right ear(its literally beep beep beep - beeeeeep-beep beep beep), as a direct as a direct consequence of my cervical dystonia, which affects the right side of my neck. In effect the tinnitus is the aural manifestation of the dystonia. I can literally hear my dystonia. Muscular activity in proximity to the aural command centre is the root cause. Typically it is minimal in th emorning but builds throughout the day. As Andrew said. acceptance plays a large part. Keeping it in the day is also essential. If my ambition is to make it to bed time, Im in with a chance. I will worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.

Awful mate, although I have worked with noisy machinery, I think the damage was done with the old method they used to use, blasting water into the ear to clear the wax. They stopped that method a few years ago now in my doctors, I think it was something to do with the damage it was causing, must admit I used to absolutely hate that method. Micro suction is way better, just to add if anyone intends getting it done, put olive oil in for 5 days plus before the appointment, the private clinics will say 48 hours, but I think that’s not near enough.
