What do we look for in an assistant manager?

I've seen a lot of ex-players thrown about for this, e.g. Rangel, who is a bloody lovely bloke and Swansea legend. But can he coach?

Do these people have coaching badges, do they have experience of managing people? Does it matter? Does their nationality matter?

Genuine question. Does Swansea legend and Spanish tick the box?

I believe the ability to motivate players is key. When you have young men who are suddenly thrust into an environment where they are paid so highly the one thing that occupies the minds of the rest of us, money, is removed.

Couple with that with the lack of real sanction if they don't perform makes it really difficult, in my view, to manage them.

So put in charge someone who is quickly able to command respect them I think you have made good strides.

Do I think Rangel would make a good technical coach? No idea, but I believe the players particularly the younger ones, would respect him.

So it would be a yes from me, but as assistant coach, and not the main man

It’s a good question but I don’t know what the answer is.
Until someone goes for it you’ll never know.

It’s a genuine question, not belittling the suggestion of Rangel...but I think some would take him (for example) instead of a seasoned, experienced assistant manager.

Anyone here could take the job if we’re talking about someone who has seen us play passing football.

This isn’t a dig at Angel by any means. I read a genuine suggestion that Curt should be AM earlier.

These assistants do more than ‘be there’, don’t they?

If Eustace is appointed, with Rangel having spent the last two years at QPR, you would assume that there is some sort of relationship between them, Rangel’s knowledge of the club would be useful to any coach. However you would also assume he needs someone he knows and can trust to bounce ideas off. Our managers are in effect coaches as Andy Scott and Winter select all the players for recruitment so I would imagine that Tate would stay but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sent back to U23’s rather than 1st team.

Rangel has got his badges and has done some coaching in Spain.

I think Rangel would be a positive if he was to come in with Eustace, knows the club inside out, especially if him and Eustace are in agreement with the style of play we all used to love us playing. Rangel summed it up with his interview about how it all changed and we lost our identity when Monk took over, Rangel knows what worked best when we was our most successful and knows what the fans want to see, also he MAY have some knowledge or tips on players we could bring in.

In a lot of cases I see assistant managers as like the opposite to the manager.
So it could be a "good cop, bad cop" type of set up.
For example, I would have thought Roberto would be more good cop in his style, Brendan Rodgers the tougher one compared to Pascoe, and Tosh drfinetly the harder one compared to Terry Medwin.
All just my opinion, as the nicest people are totally different when there is a job to be done

Still no news on what will happen to marshy? Cooper and his team hasnt got respect they deserved after he departed to be honest! I thought one of the clubs mottos was once a jack always a jack! Or is that just for the personel we choose to put that moniker on I just hope we not gonna regret letting such a safe pair of hands with quality contacts just walk away I thought the last 5 months of the season were a chor to watch also but id take anything to try and get out of this league and i believe our best chance has gone

Respect? He fecking walked out on us(With one season left on his contract) because he couldn't get a job elsewhere and we weren't prepared to throw money we don't have about. It's a two way street,I think he'll regret walking, away all of football will see through what he's done.

The assistant is the go-between between manage and players, someone who will put their arms around them when the manager gives them a boIIocking, and someone to put the cones out on the training ground. That's why they don't step up well from assistant to manager at the same club - they have to leave to become a number one. Thomas Franks might be an exception.

If someone wants you to do a job but won't give you the tools to do that job why would you stay? If you know things are going downhill would you stay?

If you knew your employer was making cuts and you could be out of a job in the next few months would you hang around? No you wouldn't

Thing is his performance decides wether he'd get sacked or not,Not the finances. He had two season of parachute payments and he knew before he came in we're a selling club(who isn't outside the top 6-8 in the Prem).
He didn't stay on beacuse he didn't get us promoted quite petty don't you think.Plenty of our managers pre Prem had far less backing than he's had.We rolled over in a play off final then he complains about not being backed,Were backing him to the best our finances can afford if it's not enough for him good riddance.
