• Thank you very much | Diolch yn fawr

All at JackArmy.net would like to thank everyone who has played a part on this site over the past 25 years whether that is through writing, contributing, moderating, posting or just visting and reading.

Without any of you the work that has gone into the site would have been pointless and we will always be proud that we built, generated and managed a community that was such a big part of the Swansea City supporting life for so long.

It has been a pleasure to bring to you the site for so long but the time is now right to turn the lights out for the last time but we do it both with a heavy heart and a sense of pride driven by the so many messages received since we announced the closure.

The site will remain here for a period until we archive and mothball it for the last time later this summer but all aspects are in a read only format.

Thank you though for all the memories

    Phil Sumbler

Where has this £8million figure come from? I'm not being provocative or trying to wind you up, it's just most of the deals in the Summer were undisclosed and I've seen this figure being banded about on Twitter/X too, so would be good to know where it's come from and how it is broken down if you don't mind / have a link which explains it - cheers!

Rough figures because different places report different figures, but:

Yates 2.5m, Tymon 2.5m, Mykolo 2m-2.5m, Tjoe 300k, Pedersen 200k and that's without the loans and frees where we potentially paid some sort fee and without Key for which the transfer fee hasn't been decided yet. So the total could potentially be over 8mill.

I think that whilst we did spend £8m on shit, it's not great money for a middling Championship club.

Coventry paid that for Haji Wright!

But we could have spent it so much better

And to provide the fill picture we brought in roughly 22million in transfers, quite a few being high earners. Haven't included fees received for Martin et al because we don't know what that'll be but that could exceed what we paid for Duff, but we do now need a new manager

Sakamoto for the same money we spent on Tymon looks like great business for them.

Again it's scouring different markets. Don't we have two slots for non work permit players these days?

Look at the work Celtic did with Japanese players, Kyogo etc. We are missing out majorly.

True. It's a shame because £8m spent correctly could have got us good players. But instead we have barely League One plodders

I've just looked him up and he's 27, which is a lot older than I'd assumed. 18 months playing in Belgium and left after his side got relegated. We brought in Kukharevych and Tjoe-A-On who are much younger. Pedersen also might count against work permit limits idk.

Data driven, moneyballtastic.

If the data suggested paying over 2million for a 22yr old striker who'd scored 9 goals in 4 seasons of senior football, I'd say we need a new recruitment strategy.

The data would have shown they both had poor records for injuries, and now injuries have prevented them getting up to speed and involved. Buying two established senior left backs ahead of Tjoe-A-On is basically the opposite of "moneyball" as well. Our recruitment as always has felt like the left hand not knowing what the right was doing rather than a clear system, we end up with players arriving in limbo, 13 signings and the first team still looking threadbare in key areas.

They're the same age as Piroe when he arrived, and both more successful in senior football than Joel had been. In theory it's the profile of player we should be targeting, but time will tell if they will be worth the investment. Some have already made their mind up that we need to spend even more money replacing them.

In context 7 of those Blackpool goals came in a crazy 3 week spell when he was playing out wide rather than centre forward, and another 5 were in the last 6 games of the season 3 of which were penalties. Long barren spells and a far worse goals per minute rate in both his previous Championship seasons than Cullen had last term.

Harry Kane a strange comparison to make given how he drops in, links play and makes his own chances. Can have quiet games but usually comes up with something. Yates has been put clean through and messed up his touch on multiple occasions. Not got the pace or strength to hold off recovering defenders when he does get it right.

"In context 7 of those Blackpool goals came in a crazy 3 week spell when he was playing out wide rather than centre forward,"

If that's the case, why don't we try playing him out wide rather than centre forward?

Piroe however was I believe signed after being spotted by Cooper? Not specifically using this moneyball approach.

And of course he cost half as much as Kuharevych and did come through at a renowned academy.

Having said that I think I'd rather put my faith in kuharevych once he's fully fit and give him a run.

Not convinced any of them are " specifically moneyball" signings. I recommend watching the film, it's pretty good.

Kyogo 4.5
Reo Hatate 1.5
Daizen Maeda 1.6
Chuck in Matt O'Riley 1.5 who we could have signed if we'd stumped up the money.
Kyogo is currently valued at 23 million and O'Riley is being monitored by AC Milan with view to a bid this January.
How much we pay for Yates and Tymon again?...

Tymon can only play off one foot which, in this day and age, makes him a footballing dinosaur.

So that makes at least two dinosaurs when you include Grimes. . . . . .
