Morning Campers.
I have started researching my family tree and while the internet sites are great (I am signed up to My Heritage) I have hit a brick wall with some names. Are there any on here who have gained expertise in this area. For example, my father's paternal line appear to have come from Tumble (not sure if top or bottom). Are there records kept with the church etc;

Depending where you're stuck at (brick wall ) - have you tried the 1939 register?? - to try and see where they were living (Tumble??)

Then work backwards from the 1921 Census.

My Great Grandfather and mother arrived in Rhos in the 1890's. The census get's a bit tricky going further back with the surname and similar names in Tumble

My wife had an Ancestry dna thingy in January where you spit in a test tube and send it off.
It’s a long story but she was born in Toronto to a French father and a Welsh mother.
She didn’t know her father only met him once because her mother brought her home to Port Talbot when she was a baby.
Anyway the dna data base showed she had a niece in Nova Scotia who had an email off Ancestry and she contacted my wife.
They are now in touch and speak on video call etc and she has sent my wife photos of her father and grandparents who she knew nothing about whatsoever.
It’s incredible.

I’m not going to do one though because I might find out I’m related to some cunt like ECB.

I’m on Ancestry and have been doing my tree since July last year. I’ve got almost 1000 relatives found, not many compared to some other searchers.
One piece of advice for anyone looking into doing their tree, try speaking to older relatives as soon as you can and get as much info from them about other family members. Also go through older relatives photos with them and write down names of anyone they recognise to identify them.
I started after all my older relatives had passed away and it’s really difficult to identify people from photos. I have 100’s of pictures of older relatives, going back to early 1900’s and no clue to who they are. Frustrating.

Edit.
You may also find out about some unsavoury characters from your distant past, but times were very different in those days and people were, shall I say, not so well off.

My dad has managed eight generations, back as far as 1790. He accomplished that without too much trouble (his words) before he hit some gaps in data.

There is a caveat with some of the links. My dad's mother's family was a Macklen from over the border . I had managed to trace a couple of lines back to the 1480's and early 1500's thanks to smart searches that link other family tree searchers. I was delighted with some of the family surnames including Christmas. I wasn't happy with one of the searches and it turns out it was the wrong "Sarah Bradley" in something like 1790 and all the research was bollocks. It would have been for a for quite a few other people as well. All fascinating stuff though and especially with things like Darran's wife's family and others.
