• Thank you very much | Diolch yn fawr

All at JackArmy.net would like to thank everyone who has played a part on this site over the past 25 years whether that is through writing, contributing, moderating, posting or just visting and reading.

Without any of you the work that has gone into the site would have been pointless and we will always be proud that we built, generated and managed a community that was such a big part of the Swansea City supporting life for so long.

It has been a pleasure to bring to you the site for so long but the time is now right to turn the lights out for the last time but we do it both with a heavy heart and a sense of pride driven by the so many messages received since we announced the closure.

The site will remain here for a period until we archive and mothball it for the last time later this summer but all aspects are in a read only format.

Thank you though for all the memories

    Phil Sumbler
    Owner, jackarmy.net

What was the reaction to us appointing Steve Cooper fresh into his first job in management? Genuine question because I can’t remember. You’d think having parachute payments we’d have gone for a steadier hand but we didn’t. Thinking about it, this isn’t a surprise at all😂

He is managing a team that is big for that division. They were only relegated the year before last. And the team leading that division is a reserve team.

Look, let’s be honest. This is an absolutely ludicrous decision.

It may turn out brilliantly - In the same way as someone putting five grand on number 17 may turn out brilliantly for someone with a mountain of credit card debt.

It doesn’t mean the decision to take on that gamble wasn’t utterly ridiculous.

We will have an inexperienced head coach, with an inexperienced head of recruitment and a CEO that has never worked at this level and was brought in to do a lower level job.

My biggest worry is that it smacks of someone trying to be bloody clever.

And before anyone starts, yes, I hope he does well, yes, I’d prefer him to Russell Martin (I’d prefer Russell Grant to Russell Martin), no, I won’t change my mind that this is a ludicrous decision if we end up getting promoted and winning the champions league, anymore than I’d suddenly think playing Euromillions is a great way to budget for the future of your family if you happened to win.
All fair points. I think I’m just trying to be positive to delude myself!

We will all try to be positive when it happens. Same as I’m still convinced we can go up this year.

It’s part of being a fan.

But I just cannot reconcile what we are trying to do commercially with looking for a manager in the Portuguese second division. Whatever his background.

We are not a big club, but neither are we a minnow.

I worry people at the club may be interested in making a name for themselves more than making the right appointment.

Why would the Board, who are almost exclusively American businessmen, know more about football than fans who have followed the game for decades?
As I said, “I’m hoping the board know more”. Emphasis on the hoping part!
I’ve followed the swans for decades, but I know nothing about this guy. Maybe they do?

As with everyone on this forum, I’m hoping they know what they are doing and make the right choices and the guy is a success, whoever he is!

This is proper loopy. You can just imagine them convincing each other how clever and inspired this will be when it works and not for one second realising how high risk it is.

If it comes off, great, but it'll never be anything other than reckless.

Martinez was a hell of a punt too, but at least he knew the club, had a solid base of players for the division and we didn't have a great deal to lose. If we get relegated this time around, I'd fear a slippery slope as everyone loses interest.

I was thinking this is either going to be a canny appointment that turns out to be genius, or we'll be making another change by February. But then I checked myself, and it's just far more likely to end up completely humdrum and average, just like the last god knows how many coaches we've had in the last few years. I'm neither excited nor disappointed by this appointment. I don't really care anymore tbh.

Can't remember who said it the other day but whoever said it made what looks like a very prescient point - owners were quite happy to splurge £10m+ on players last summer, but they don't seem to think forking out serious bucks for a more proven coach is worth a go. Strikes me as muddled thinking.

The reaction to Steve Cooper’s appointment was mainly foil hatted panic because his father was a referee who hated us.

Twitter was mainly unkind comments about his appearance. The reaction on here was nothing out of the ordinary. I have never actually looked but his championship points per game managed must be spectacular.

You know we’re in trouble when someone reckons fans who’ve followed football for decades know more than people at the club, this thread dispels that myth…I rest my case M’Lord.

A fan from here who has followed football for decades is one of the people making decisions at the club.

Didn’t say that. Said the Board not people at the club.

Board is just various US businessmen (and Martin Morgan who does obviously know more). People like gorringe are not on the Board.

Ps I was also referring to people like Gorringe as the board (apologies for the confusion)
